A vial of bovine insulin in the mid 1980s (you can see newpaper ads) was under $2-3.
Various "old" human analogs are long off patent but the lowest prices are still sky high. e.g. Walmart's generic $73 vs others in the $100-$250 range.

Similarly, prescription forms of generic vitamins can have prices like $25-$50 per few milligrams vs China FOB prices of $100 per kg.
The problem is a lack of competition through various regulatory, political, buyout and payoff techniques; and lots of government extracted or printed money.
