rhmattn writes: Fedora 22 will ship with GCC 5, which brings a whole host of enhancements, among which is a new default C++ ABI. Fedora is going to transition to that ABI over two Fedora releases F22 and F23. Submission + - Spyware Developed By NSA Resides In HDD Firmware

An anonymous reader writes: The Russian computer security firm Kaspersky has uncovered spyware code buried in the firmware of common hard disk drives. The spyware kit has been customized to support all major HDD brands. Most of the infections have occurred in countries that are frequent US spying targets, such as China, Iran, Pakistan and Russia. Kaspersky declined to publicly name the country behind the spying campaign, but said it was closely linked to Stuxnet, the NSA-led cyberweapon that was used to attack Iran's uranium enrichment facility. A former NSA employee told Reuters that Kaspersky's analysis was correct, and that people still in the intelligence agency valued these spying programs as highly as Stuxnet. Another former intelligence operative confirmed that the NSA had developed the prized technique of concealing spyware in hard drives, but said he did not know which spy efforts relied on it. Kaspersky published the technical details of its research on Monday, which should help infected institutions detect the spying programs, some of which trace back as far as 2001.

Umm... can I please have the side-effects, if the side effects are, you know, NOT GETTING CANCER?

NVidia Puts the Kibosh On Overclocking of GTX 900M Series 138

An anonymous reader writes Nvidia surprised members of the overclocking community this week when it pulled OC support from drivers for its 900M series mobile graphics cards. Many users (particularly those who bought laptops with higher-end cards like the 980m) were overclocking – until the latest driver update. Now, Nvidia is telling customers not to expect OC capabilities to return. “Unfortunately GeForce Notebooks were not designed to support overclocking,” wrote Nvidia’s Manuel Guzman. “Overclocking is by no means a trivial feature, and depends on thoughtful design of thermal, electrical, and other considerations. By overclocking a notebook, a user risks serious damage to the system that could result in non-functional systems, reduced notebook life, or many other effects.”

I gave the guy $10. I doubt the NSA gives a shit who donates money.

Fact is people use his software to help blow the whistle on tyranny and oppression all around the world. Regardless of what you think of him, his business practices, or even if you're retarded enough to think he has something to do with the Brothers Koch, the fact remains that keeping these tools alive to further the cause is more important than your petty political or armchair-MBA opinions.

Airbags, ABS, and Seatbelts in their cars
Smoke detectors or fire extinguishers in their homes
Insurance of any kind (that's socialism, right?)
Chlorinated water from their water service
Flame retardant furniture
Any other safety device mandated by government ever

The problem will take care of itself rather quickly when all of the anti-vaxxers have died off.
