We are using it because it is marginally better than a hole in the head.

I particularly dislike the fact that, not only have you left the roundabout, but have entered the next one, before it notices. It is positively dangerous when you have to go round a roundabout twice for it to catch up! (In a 40 ton rig).

And that on a Note 3, but it used to work well on an HTC Desire Bravo!

Come of Google - you need to test software before you release it - you are not Microsoft

Pretty hard to do that with a touch screen.

Its several years ago, I am sure, that we heard of touch screens with "pixels" that vibrated to give a touchable image. I believe one used piezo pixels, and the other had pulsating voltages, but I am not certain of either.

I believe Microsoft bought one of the (at least two) competing technologies. Given the potential for keyboards you can actually feel, and porn apps, I am surprised the technology is not already in high end phones.

More use in a touch screen than a lot of other junk we have - like "3D" you can't feel, that requires your eyes to be focussed at a different distance from your attention!

My mum used to use an IBM709, which used valves, and ran Ibjob/Fortran2, but was later upgraded to a 7090 (transistors, but same instruction set) and Fortran4. It had 12 tape drives. AFAICR, no GPS and no 3G (not even 2G - in fact, no G's at all).

I used to support 12 users on a PDP11 wit 1MB of RAM (4 disk drives and two tape drives). Also no G's, nor GPS but not much chance of it moving anywhere - it filled an 18 ton truck, and used 415V at 20A, (provided you spun up the disks one at a time).

The spec of this phone is way better than the original IBM PC, and the build quality is probably better than a lot of the original clones. But it would be better to buy a second hand phone if you are spending under $100. You can by a Samsung Galaxy S2 for that. (A PDP11 would probably cost more, but it might also be more fun).

Meanwhile, my Samsung Note 3 does not even support tape drives! No scsi port, and no drivers for my USB DAT drives. I am still waiting for MT-ST to be ported to Android. Shame.

As long as a capitalist* exists, most of the world's population has a chance to eat. However, society needs to restrain capitalists in return for permitting them to continue.

Out of interest, how would you stop a man who invests his time in making and using tools from being more productive than one who sits on his ass all day drinking beer/vodka?

* Actually, it is monetary exchange that sustains the world's population at its present level. It is not the same as capitalisim, but nor is the American system of selling government to the highest bidder the same thing as capitalism - even if a lot of people think it is.
