Let us set the wayback machine to 1929.
"Gentlemen do not read each others' mail." - Henry Stimson, U.S. Secretary of State.

Which brings us to another useful quote by George Santayana back in 1905 -- "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it."

The NSA needs to give up the concept of domestic, drag-net style data gathering. Pick a target, don't just gather everything and sift for potential targets.

They probably disable iptables because they don't use system-level firewalls on servers, regardless of the OS.

And they disable SELinux because they probably don't have anyone who understands how to use it, much less use it well. MAC is great for security, but requires a depth of knowledge of your systems that most places just don't have.

I've seen both actions at several government agencies for those exact reasons.

Journal Journal: Six Months with a Chromebook

About six months ago my main PC died and I needed a new one. Not having a lot of cash, and not really having a lot of free time to spend on the computer, I decided to get an Acer C7 Chromebook to hold me over.

I can see where discussion sites don't allow for deletion as it is a royal PITA to maintain site integrity, threads, etc. if a user disappears.

My Nokia N800 had a built-in FM tuner that only worked when the earphone cord was plugged in and that was back in 2007. I know it wasn't the first to do that because it was a feature in one of the chipsets included in the device.

I never knew anyone actually used this feature.

This is the Internet. That is what they do here.

That being said, your civics lesson left out the large role lobbying and campaign contributions play in the decisions and actions of both Congress and the Executive. While the President can safely ignore the ranting of Internet dogs, he and the other players can't just blow off the leaders of some of the largest, most profitable corporations in the world. Mr. Obama may not be seeking re-election, but anyone looking for $$ from that crowd would do well to notice that they don't give a damn about the ACA and are up in arms about the NSA.

What? Where?

I just picked up some 40w equivalent dimmable LEDs (note the lack of the apostrophe :-) in candelabra form with a daylight spectrum and the damned things cost me $13 each. Those were essentially the cheapest I could find. The equivalent CFLs didn't fit in the chandelier, but were $10 for a 3-pack.
