Comment Re:That Analogy Falls Apart (Score 1) 917

I know where you're going with this, and I couldn't be more excited. "Mars Dust", "The Red Bang", "God of War", "Red Dust", "Crystal Red"... Sure it costs $10M a hit, but holy shit, you'll feel like you're on Mars. Then the Asian and Mexican gangs will get involved, take over the "business", and suddenly we'll have a drug war in space.

I had this same attack happen on our company's PBX about five years ago. The CLEC providing us Internet and voice (Integra Telecom, worst phone company ever) forgot to put a password on the admin account of the voice mail box. One day MCI fraud calls us about the $10,000 bill we had racked up over the weekend. Because we had multiple voice channels (seven at the time) the attackers could place three outbound calls at the same time, which easily came to over 6,000 minutes in just two days.

Submission + - NORAD's Santa Tracking Goes Web 2.0 (noradsanta.org)

iluvcapra writes: NORAD Tracks Santa 2007, NORAD's perennial mission of tracking the progress of Santa's sleigh as he makes his yearly sortie, has gone Web 2.0 this year, including a Google Maps mashup showing Santa's current position on Earth (at time of submission, Keetmanshoop, Namibia), a KML link to let you track Santa on Google Earth, and plots and keyhole imagery on youtube.

My only question: When Santa crosses into the ADIZ, what does he set his squawk to?

Submission + - I never visit slashdot anymore. (rssresponse.com)

MSIncome writes: "RSS has for a long time been used in the realm of delivering news and basically was pretty useless. Things have changed a lot over time and now people are starting to use RSS in much wider formats. Delivery of sports results almost as fast as they happen, Cartoons, books by chapter, in fact the majority of sites are offering a feed or trying to.

This is simply because it saves a lot of time. Instead of having to go to your favorite sites only to see that nothing new has been posted you can now just go to one place, your RSS Reader, and see any updates. With full text feeds becoming much more popular many people may not directly visit web sites much any more.

With the recent acquisition of Feedburner by Google and many other corporates trying to get a portion of the RSS market it makes you wonder what do they know that we may not.

RSS is invading many of the traditional haunts. Even the latest offering by RSS Response, which is an RSS Autoresponder, is taking on the giant email autoresponder companies that are trying to mix their dying craft with RSS. http://rssresponder.com/

The question is not have you heard of RSS anymore but what feeds can we share.

I know even with Slashdot I am able to quickly scan the results and choose exactly where I want to go. Maybe one day they will also do full feeds and then I can read it all on my reader.

This is a revolution as many people now never actually visit the website as they simply read all the content in their reader.

Are you using RSS and do you actually come to the site?

Submission + - The Great Iraq Swindle

Drahgkar writes: Have you ever wondered where all the money the government has spent on the war in Iraq has gone? Wonder no more as you read The Great Iraq Swindle on Rolling Stone's website. "How is it done? How do you screw the taxpayer for millions, get away with it and then ride off into the sunset with one middle finger extended, the other wrapped around a chilled martini? Ask Earnest O. Robbins — he knows all about being a successful contractor in Iraq."

Submission + - PayPal Down and Out (paypal.com)

nilbog writes: "PayPal has been down most of the day. As a result, Ebay has come to a halt as people cannot pay for their won auctions, sellers cannot see if users have paid, and no money can be moved or accessed. Even people who get paid through paypal at the beginning of the month are now suffering during the outage.

Ebay has recognized the problem and issued two statements, claiming to be working on a fix.

This marks one of the rare occasions when a major website experiences a long-term outage. It has obviously effected some more than others, and serves as a healthy reminder of how much we have come to rely on Internet-based technologies."

Submission + - Al Gore talks about his book, confesses to read /.

An anonymous reader writes: Al Gore has come out with his new Book — The Assault on Reason, and has generated quite a media buzz. Everybody asking is he going to run for president, and one of the more interesting interviews is available at Politico — where he confesses to be occasionally reading Slashdot.

"[Mr. Gore] has a Google news page and regularly reads about two dozen sites that range from traditional outlets like USA Today as well as new media venues like Slashdot.org, a technology site, and Huffington Post."

Al is also voicing himself in the upcoming Futurama movie.

Submission + - The Xbox 360 get its own LiveCD

eZtaR writes: The guys over at the Free60 project have released a working, gentoo-based linux live cd for the xbox 360. Sporting the gnome desktop and various applications such as Firefox and Evolution, one can pop the CD in and enjoy ones triplecore powerpc doing simpler tasks such as checking up on the latest news here on slashdot. Although it lacks features such as sound and hardware acceleration (which the developers blame on lack of hardware-docs) it's currently working on firmware versions 4532 and 4548, without risking breaking your warranty.
