Comment This is a big deal.. (Score 2) 99

The comments so far have made this out to not be such a big deal, people should just use other browsers. I see it differently. The majority of smartphone users now aren't just the tech savy, it is now mostly ordinary users too. When considering 500MB is the usual data cap this is a problem, with the amount of data slurped up by the likes of Facebook, this must push useage up pretty high if loading a wikipedia page is taking over 2MB of data. Once your over your cap, the costs sky rocket. This is before you even thinking about the difference in loading time of 3G from the need to pull 10 times as much data.

Unfortunately with the situation we have on android, with handset developers and carriers both being reluctant to push updates, don't expect this to be fixed any time soon.

"Much of the current litigation in the so called 'smartphone patent wars' could be avoided if companies were willing to recognize the value of others’ creations in a way that is fair." Most of the Android licensing deals have been based around FAT32, which has been around since Win95. What sort of credible value of that technology remains in 2013? Absolutely none.

Depends how you look at it. When I bought my house it was a new housing estate in the UK, Scotland to be precise. The house was valued at £225,000 when I bought it 4 years ago. There is 15% of the mortgage left to pay. Do you want my deeds for 15% of the house value? My real point was, Garnet talk shit.

Sometimes I feel like these patent cases have more in common with a TV drama than a court of law. We already know there is going to be another trial anyway rending all this completely moot. No doubt there will be many more twists and turns to come after that. What makes it even more ridiculous is that the $1B in the first place simply amounted to a small rebate for the money Apple give Samsung to make chips for them.

And the winners are: the lawyers.

He claims to love Linux, but what he really loves is himself. And every time it looks like Linux might achieve even a modicum of success, his overinflated ego is always there to ruin it.

Someone needs to tell him that it's hard enough to get people to adopt your OS with 3 million competing distros, much less with the leadership of an egotistical ass who takes every opportunity to scream like bipolar child at anyone who tries to actually help. The only thing Garrett was doing in this case was recognizing a problem going forward, and fixing it. And Torvalds tears his head off for it. He thinks everything has to be a big heroic stand--with him as hero, of course.

Well, if you read the mail conversation you'll know the majority of developers came out in agreeance with Linus and his views.on the matter. He has said he's tried being nicer, it just isn't him though. He is usual right though and when wrong accepts it. He is an extremely good maintainer regardless of peoples opinions on him.

Submission + - Ubuntu Touch Is More Android Than Ubuntu (muktware.com) 2

sfcrazy writes: Canonical was gaga about their new tablet and phone OS. You keep hearining them taking about convergence,Qt and QML but two words you never heard was Android or CyanogenMod. It's discovered that 80% Ubuntu Touch is just Android or CyanogenMod. They are using the word done by CyanogenMod community to slap Ubuntu services on phone. Is this they way open source should be developed? Is Canonical breaking the ethics of free software?

Yes, it's generally in the nature of these companies to spend unneeded money. They hire people who's exact job is to make data centers' as efficient as possible. Even to the extent Facebook and others are open sourcing their information to try and get others involved to improve data center design. I say generally as I'm sure most seen the story on here recently over Microsoft wasting energy to meet a contract target, that however is a totally different kettle of fish.
