Webster, Texas has been on a long downhill slide for two years. Optical media (CD/DVD/BluRay) removed and replaced with "as seen on TV" a year ago. Then, a month ago when I went to buy a solder sucker, electronic parts were down to about 25% of original shelf space and the only one available was part of a $50 kit. This place is literally two miles from NASA/Johnson Space Center, so there is no shortage of geeks that could keep their hobbyist section alive.

Surely you jest. Yes, an OLED is susceptible to burn-in, but will not let you down if treated properly. A display model, which has probably been set to a static image for hundreds of hours, is not a proper case study. I have a 2015 OLED with 7000 hours on it. Not a bit of burn-in. I wouldn't trade it for anything (especially because in addition the color advantages of OLED, it's also a 3-D model.

New USB Cable Kills Your Linux Laptop if Stolen in a Public Place (zdnet.com) 151

A software engineer has designed a so-called USB "kill cable" that works as a dead man's switch to shut down or wipe a Linux laptop when the device is stolen off your table or from your lap in public spaces like parks, malls, and internet cafes. From a report: The cable, named BusKill, was designed by Michael Altfield, a software engineer and Linux sysadmin from Orlando, Florida. The idea is to connect the BusKill cable to your Linux laptop on one end, and to your belt, on the other end. When someone yanks your laptop from your lap or table, the USB cable disconnects from the laptop and triggers a udev script that executes a series of preset operations.

Maybe today's market is tiny, but in 15 years, it will have to be 100% of the new car market. Possibly a little less if the next Administration cracks down and actually outlaws two-strokes and engines without catalytic converters (leaf blowers and lawn mowers have ~11 times the carbon footprint of automobiles on an hourly usage basis).

Every car maker wants to make electric vehicles, they just don't want to pay for the R&D to make good ones, and are waiting for somebody else to shoulder the initial financial burden. When everyone wakes up to smell the coffee, there won't be anyone losing money making electric cars; the prices will have to go up, and consumers will have to pay them.

That question isn't exactly relevant to this discussion, because Locast just uses the exact same model. They're not skipping commercials or substituting their own--they are only echoing the broadcast. It's a very useful service. My son isn't allowed to install an outdoor antenna in his Brooklyn apartment, and accesses local broadcasts on his AppleTV.

Indeed. I suffered through the G Stylo, which, in spite of its wonderful camera, fell horribly short in GPS performance due to its silly antenna setup. They fixed that issue with the Stylo 2, but took away the laser-focused camera (though the camera is still quite good), the battery life is great and overall I'm quite happy with the Stylo 2. I'm still running it even though it's approaching three years old.

I think some of the battery life comes from it using a basic 400-series SOC instead of something more power-hungry. That, and I don't spend my day with my face glued to my phone, but even when I run Strava (screen off) on an extra-long bike ride, I still have plenty of juice for the whole day.

As it is, I think I'm going to wait for the 5G dust to settle before getting a new phone, unless I break it. However, I'm not going to be brand-loyal, and while LG still has a shot at selling me a new phone, there are some Nokia models that look intriguing to me.

Umm... in 1999 there weren't Smartphones that had "GPS, Internet connection and Mapping software." Also, you're reading the summary. It's like saying "Titanic was a derivative movie, there was already a 'best love story of all time'". That's meaningless. You have to look at the actual claims.

There were GPS and cellular modem add-ons available for the Palm III in 1999. TCP/IP stack was built-in, with browser and email capabilities.
