$110 million, couldn't have taken that

at a much worse time in
the economy.

[I just checked the announcement date and it was marked March 31st, so, this
is 'old news' but not posted on /. news.]
I came across a YAMP (Yet Another Media Player) aimed at occupying a slot in
your Audio Video arsenal.
It's called Myka and they seem to
have forged a relationship with BitTorrent to promote themselves.
They have self-appointed themselves with the moniker, TorrentTV.
The specs appear to be adequate
although not cutting edge. Wifi(g), HDMI, Entry level HD size of 80G (up to
500G).
450 DMIPS SOC, 16 MB Flash memory, 256 MB DDRAM, Linux, Out Definition:480i,480p,576i,576p,720p
or 1080i
Decoding Formats:MPEG (Layer1,2),MP3,AAC,WMA.
In their forum, it was asked what distro is being used:
"It is a highly specialized
version of Linux designed for embedded devices. We do run a browser and Java."
Now that's marketing! -=)
The entry level pricing point
of $299 appears low enough to entice those that are on the fence and aren't
of the DIY ilk.
I am wondering if those that get their media from outlets such as torrents would
see this as a welcomed piece of
hardware? Or would they simply be inclined to do as I (and many others have)
and find someone with a laptop
that has an adequate CPU maybe with dedicated video memory but a horribly
maimed screen and offer them a
hundred bucks to 'take it off their hands'.
The laptop is for my quiet indoor solution (set-top), I have employed old mini-towers
for the garage and even
one outside (AZ weather, not too worried about humidity. Static, yes, moisture,
no.) I'm probably not going to
be on that pre-order list. I'll pick one up when they are $40 on ebay.
We have talked about set-tops before most recently here: Blockbuster
