Comment CS will fill jail cells. (Score 1) 629

So, with the continued attitude that anyone who changes a parameter from the default setting is suddenly a "terrorist", I can only assume that the push for more CS in schools today is nothing more than a lobbyist-driven push to fill privatized prisons.

It might as well be, with felony threats against a 14-year old. Don't be surprised when you can't get any gender to fill a CS classroom with idiotic law enforcement reactions like this.

I think the "dick pics" line actually really works well. If you think about it from the perspective of the average person, a lot of people buy the NSA's statements that they don't care about the communications of most Americans and that PRISM is necessary to maintain security. After all, a lot of people post everything they do on Facebook or Twitter where anyone can see it.

One of the articles I read on this mentioned that even people who support or don't care about the NSA suddenly cared when they realized that the NSA can see the things they don't post on Facebook (nude pics, sexting, etc).

If framing the NSA's data collection programs as "dick pics" makes more people understand, then I'm all for it.

Do not confuse apathy with stupidity.

The government is monitoring every single path that innocent civilians are taking to communicate these days, under the guise of national security, which is not only unethical, but also illegal under our Constitution.

...the salary budget to pay for reasonably competent pilots, or the medical/psych budget to screen reasonably competent pilots at regular intervals?

It would have perhaps helped if they did not completely ignore the warning signs of depression with this particular pilot. Yet again, likely budget constraints, but perhaps not the ones most obvious.

I kind of agree on the monitoring, but then again it is actually exceedingly rare that planes "disappear", and even in those exceedingly rare cases, monitoring alone wouldn't have changed the fate of the flights in question, so there is bound to be some question about the cost/benefit of such a system.

You're right. It may not change the outcome or prevent an accident, but determining exactly where an accident occurred helps immensely when trying to unearth other clues provided by black boxes and other relevant hardware. We certainly struggled with that last year, but with the appropriate technology planes would not stay missing.
