Comment costs of generation vs distribution (Score 2) 335

From what I've seen mentioned on this they are getting high electric bills not because of high generation costs but because of high distribution costs.
So someone is out blaming solar when it's hardly the problem and if it really were the problem the solution is spreading out 7-14kWh batteries on homes with solar.
But instead, we see massive mega battery stations getting funded by State and Federal agencies and being put out in the boonies so expensive distribution lines need to be installed or upgraded. A win for the utilities and even more costs to the consumers.

Home storage using LFP batteries are the way to go for flattening the solar output curve and eliminating the 4-9p high energy usage bump.

Comment how do US Utilities profit from solar (Score 2) 101

Government back utility monopolies are too deeply entrenched in State and local government retirement systems for them to get behind solar in a big way. Only with Federal backing do they put in centralized solar farms and battery systems. Since they are promised annual profits cheaper energy does not fit the model of constantly growing utility companies.

So the burden is on the home owners and property owners to install solar and battery storage to reduce skyrocketing electric bills.

I wonder which vendor they are trying to limit developer interactions with in these moves so late in the game.

Ford and GM have made their trucks into EVs and therefore they need huge batteries to get anything near 300 mile range and that's empty of cargo.
Tesla on the other hand makes EVs into a truck. What I'm getting at is the classic companies designed their utility EVs by using an existing ICE design and converted them into an EV. They are heavy and not aerodynamic and little effort was put into improving either of those and therefore they consume large amounts of energy to move down the road. Tesla engineers put massive amount of engineering effort into lowering weight and aerodynamic drag.

Only so many Ford fans will switch from ICE to EV because they based their company image on being a bull in a china store. And on top of that, both Ford and GM are heavily vested into using 3rd party vendors for large portions of their vehicles so they can't reduce pricing and their unions fight automation which reduces the workforce size.

The decks are stacked against Ford, GM and Stalantis.

So by losing they also win since it would eliminate one of their current competitors. Nokia had their own OS and was prototyping a Linux based phone when Microsoft 'ex' executive swooped in and directed Nokia to using only Windows Phone phone OS and Nokia crumpled. The 'former' exec was then brought back to Microsoft when the remains, and patents were brought home to Microsoft.

Danger was a thriving phone product and network until Microsoft purchased them, forced off Linux and their Window-ized version failed and Danger failed. But a successful Linux platform was dispensed with. The list goes on and on.

Microsoft is where companies and products go to die and that is still a win for Microsoft. No doubt it's part of the plan.

I would look to see where the prosecution is tied to Microsoft. My guess is that it's far less than the 7 degrees from Kevin Bacon.

If that's not possible, then figure out a way to convert them to Class B LSV( 45MPH roads or less ) and try to get another 5 or more years of use out of the car and battery.

Just saving part of the battery pack and putting into an expensive charger while throwing everything else away is not going to appease many.

Google's penchant for deprecating products is a constant worry for me, particularly our insane reliance on BQ. While BQ StandardSQL is close enough, lifting and shifting to something like AWS or Azure's cloud warehouse tooling would definitely be a headache.

That said, with their deep integration w/GA4 reporting and continued development of BQ, I am guessing they make enough money (particularly after their 25% price increase for on-demand) that it'll stay around for another few years.

Fingers crossed because, honestly, I don't want to have to deal with management of our warehouse and BQ makes it easy for us not to worry about that at all.
