Plastic bags are a heck of a lot cheaper than paper. I imagine most plastic is cheaper than paper. Paper doesn't get a big old' giant government paycheck for growing and harvest lumber like the oil people do for mining oil.

Do you understand how things are manufactured? Often, there are many steps to manufacture an end product. Along the way, those companies and industries will add value to something in some way, and then sell that thing to somebody else for a profit. You're right that Monsanto doesn't make your dinner. McDonald's does, probably. But Monsanto creates the items that eventually become your dinner, and does so as a result of you giving McDonald's money.

A large portion of consumer plastics are recyclable - PET, HDPE, and polypropylene are recovered for profit these days.

That's great news. I'll tell my county that they should stop paying to recycle our plastic and demand payments from the recyclers, instead!

I live in the US. Everybody (90% of people I encounter) I see is staring at a gadget all of the time. I've visited Europe multiple times in the past few years. The percentage of phone zombies there was much, much lower than I've experienced here.
