where I work we bought a $2300 precision laptop (chosen due to actual ethernet port & quadro) and it is now on it's 2nd motherboard under warranty. I'm certain we could have got a equivalent pre-owned thinkpad for $500 or less and had zero problems with near identical performance.
It IS a nice laptop, but come-on man.

Yeah, and the military naturally. Something like this could kill electronics stone dead from a great distance and its affects on soldiers I imagine wouldn't be too pleasent either though whether that would be more practical than just bullets is anyones guess. However it would be extremely stealthy.

I upgraded to a used Dell T5600 workstation complete with a 8 core hyperthreaded xeon and 32 GB of ram running an SSD. Finally I've got enough power to run firefox with a hundred tabs open.
The key failure was backups either nonexistent or vulnerable to the ransomware. It isn't reasonable to expect to prevent a ransomware attack from ever happening. The best defense is to make it a "meh, whatever, I've got my files right over here" moment.
I have serious doubts this will do anything. The proof will be whether or not my phone becomes usable.
And by usable, I mean whether or not I stop using my known contacts as an effective whitelist - if I don't have the caller in my phone I don't answer.
