Not that I actually remember much from linux development back then, but around that time AMD Opteron was the chip to get. Instead of the IA64 instruction set, the Opteron introduced AMD64. This introduced 64 bit to the standard x86 CPUs, and later became the standard for both manufacturers and was renamed into x86_64. Intel was also behind in performance, due to scaling issues with its Netburst microarchitecture.
