They should build a tunnel across the Bering Strait. Imagine how cool it would be to be able to take a road trip from Tierra del Fuego to Cape Town.

Well shit, there goes my ONE BILLION dollar(err pound) bid. So is it partly operational then? Besides being a gigantic paper weight and looking pretty, could it even dig a six foot hole?

Interestingly, most nuclear tests were done deep underground. And yet, the world still didn't explode.

not necessary *fishy*. I do not expect the target group for a 580-tonne Tunnel Boring Machine being a regular customer of eBay. Mostly it will be some construction companies who create an account especially for this bid. Since it is covered by media you do not need to be regular visitor on eBay to find out about this auction.

If they were really serious in helping a charity then they would donate the purchase price + the amount it would have cost them commercially to dispose of the TBM as thats what they are really saving.

Any idea what it would have cost them to get someone to dispose of this thing ?

(my guess would be tens of thousands of minimum)

Not only are they convincing some poor clueless ebay user to cart off their junk for them but they are getting said clueless ebay user to actually pay for the privilege.

    Amazing.

An Ada exception is when a routine gets in trouble and says 'Beam me up, Scotty'.
