Journal JobCenter's Journal: Job Board, November 14, 2003 13

Bad news, in the form of a layoff, for Interrobang; her entry has been changed from "looking for more fulfilling work" to simply "looking for work". Of course, more fulfilling work would be a nice bonus. There is a new entry for Saige, who is looking to relocate from Chicago to Seattle. According to Jack William Bell, the job market in the Seattle area is improving.

If you have submitted an entry, and the availability (either position or employee) has changed, please let me know. I am in the process of reviewing the listings.

The "useful links" have been moved to a separate journal entry, due to increasing size.

Positions Wanted. The following individuals are seeking employment. Each listing contains a link to a comment that mentioned the individual's availability, as well as a link to their user page. Please contact these people directly, by e-mail (if they provide a contact address) or by replying to the comment.
  • RevMike has experience with enterprise financial systems, using Java, J2EE, PL/SQL, Pro*C, Perl, and XML. He is located in the New York City/Long Island area.
  • intermodal is also looking for work in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. He does tech/administrator work for unix, linux, and all versions of windows. He also has Software QA experience. He would also be interested in any fire department that is willing to provide training; he already has experience in that area, being currently with a volunteer department.
  • buffer-overflowed has a variety of experience, including C++ development, Unix and network administration, and help desk, on-site, and desktop support. He is currently located in Charleston, WV, but may be open to relocation.
  • heliocentric is an experienced admin and IT support person in the Harrisburg area. He is particularly interested in working in the information security area, where he has had some past experience. He would also be interested in a position in the Reading area.
  • aridhol is a programmer with three years experience in C, C++, and Java, located in Winnipeg. He is a Sun-certified Java programmer with a CS degree from Camosun College in Victoria, BC.
  • Jellybob is looking for a junior sysadmin position in southern England. He has had five years of experience supporting Windows boxes, and three years supporting Linux on both servers and desktops. He also has four years of PHP/MySQL development for web applications and community-based websites, and has a working knowledge of Python. He is willing to learn anything else required.
  • Judg3 is a Windows jack of all trades, specializing in enterprise system and application management and deep level troubleshooting. His strength is taking an assignment and bringing it in on-time and under-budget. He's also at the power-user level with FreeBSD and Linux. There's more detail in the referenced comment, I'd strongly sugest giving it a read. He's looking in the Milwaukee area, land of beer and sausages (mmmmmm, Usinger's), and home of former car salesman Bud Selig.
  • Interrobang is looking for work as a technical writer. She has two years of direct experience, a Master's degree in Language and Professional Writing. Check out her additional qualifications here. She's currently in London, Ontario, but is willing to relocate (preferred destinations Toronto, the Kitchener/Waterloo area, or New York City).
  • ces is an experienced Unix system/network admin. His experience includes a variety of Unix-based OSes, as well as networking hardware. He also has some admin and troubleshooting experience with Windows. Check the linked comments for more detailed examinations of his credentials. He is looking for work in the Seattle area.
  • Xerithane is looking for contract work in the Portland area. He is a senior C++ and Perl programmer, with six years of experience in the field. He has advanced knowledge of Unix and Linux.
  • Saige is a C developer with six years of telecom experience, as well as experience with test software. She is looking for a job in the Seattle area, and has a particular interest in internal tools, such as the development of test automation software.

Employees Wanted. Pretty much the same format. When submitting for this section, please include a link any on-line job listing that is available.

  • SiliconJesus works at Digex. The company has job listings posted here. The current positions listing is somewhat shorter than previously; positions that may be of interest to Slashdotters include Siebel Developer (Washington/Metro) and WebMethods Developer (Washington/Metro). These listings change, so take a look for yourself.
  • Servo posted an available position in his journal last month. The position is still available, and it sounds like they could really use some help. Here is a direct link to the job listings page; the specific job is Tier II (Site Supervisor) for New York City.
  • FortKnox needs experienced J2EE coders, experienced project management, or experienced business analysts. The experience is an absolute requirement. These are located in the Cincinnati area.
  • According to blinder, his employer, The Seva Group, has an opening for a J2EE developer, with 3+ years of experience including Websphere. The job is at a client site in the Baltimore area. If you are interested, reply to this post or e-mail JobCenter (I can forward the mail to him). Since he just got an unexpected raise, this might be a company worth looking into. Too bad they're not in Dallas.
  • jawtheshark works for Fujitsu Consulting in Luxembourg. Fujitsu has several positions available, including experienced Documentum (enterprise content management) experts, data architects, and entry level IT work. E-mail CVs to slashdot(at)jawtheshark.com; he will direct them to the proper destination. There are positions open in both Belgium and Luxembourg. JTS recommends Luxembourg, for certain financial reasons. I've been reading his journal for a few months now, and I have to say that it sounds like a nice place to live.
  • wowbagger is doing his part to see that your job search is not infinitely prolonged. His company, Aeroflex, has four openings for senior DSP engineers in the Wichita, Kansas area. These are highly specific qualifications; if you don't have the experience, please do not waste their time. The positions are: Sr. Software Engineer, Sr. Software Engineer - Embedded Systems, Sr. Software Engineer, and Sr. DSP Engineer - Wireless Communications.

The boilerplate:

Thanks to everyone for supporting this effort. If you have an issue with your listing, let me know ASAP (e-mail or IM might be best). If you have a position, are seeking a job, or have comments about the format, please post a reply to this JE. Suggestions are always welcome, by e-mail or by comment. I aim to have every opening or job need mentioned in a JE within 24 hours of my becoming aware of it. Subsequent JEs will repeat entries from prior job boards that are still open. If you have an item listed, please let me know ASAP when it is no longer current. I would love to be able to post a success story or two here!

  • desparate here. We (the company I work for) are in desparate need for J2EE, ColdFusion, C#/C++ developers in the Baltimore/DC area. Those with security clearances are urgently sought.

ColdFusion developers... please, get in touch. Too much work, not enough people. Its very simple... if you are good, have REAL professional experience, and want to work for a small but very stable and *profitable* consultancy, do get in touch ASAP.

God, that sounds like some bullshit recruiting line. Ugh... my appologies.

    So,
    • I'd be there in a flash if I wasn't tied down here in Winnipeg. Unfortunately, my wife's career sorta dictates where we live - as a programmer, I can work anywhere; as a special-pathogens virologist, she's limited to a dozen locations.
      • What sort of things does your wife do? My daughter is interested in micro and molecular biology (she's a senior in college this year).
        • Disclaimer: I can't go into details for national security reasons.

My wife studies ebola [nih.gov]. (That article was written before we were married, so it's under her maiden name). The term "special pathogens" means that she's trained to work with BSL4 [msu.edu] organisms (basically, it'll kill you and everybody who comes into contact with you, and there's nothing we can do about it).

Apparently, it's a lot of drudge work, and your life schedule revolves around the experiment, which pretty much eliminates 9-5, Monday-Frid

          • My daughter is interested in that sort of thing. Would your wife be open to giving some career advice be e-mail. Nothing sensitive, (wrt national security), just what kind of things she should study, what the work is like, and so on - stuff that might be useful for a high school senior currently applying to colleges. E-mail me if it would be OK. Thanks.
    • I'll update the entry for the Seva Group as soon as I can. Are you interested in people with lapsed security clearances, as well as those with current ones? (I seem to remember that it's easier to reactivate a lapsed one than to get a new one, but I may be wrong)
  • CIBER is a pretty decent company to work for. They compensate their consultants well.

They have offices all over the country, canadia and europe.
This is the link to all our postings:

The owner of this account can webbify it if they want to post it to the main journal.
I've worked out of the Bloomington, Illinois office for the past 3 years, you can contact me concerning questions about the postings for that area. I may have more insight to the position than the generic post
