The Saudis hate the Iranians, and knew that sanctions would be lifted. Additionally, they knew that their influence would be deeply diminished by the world increasingly looking at Saudi Arabia's human rights violations and sponsorship of terrorist groups. If the world were to continue to lessen its dependence on oil, eventually sanctions against Saudi Arabia would become inevitable.

It's because, Russia [bloombergview.com]. Saudi Arabia and the "terrorists" are providing a valuable service to the "West", especially Europe, though containment is becoming an issue.
