It's a real possibly, with Iran adding to the glut. The big difference between this and '86 is that now the renewables are cost competitive... Well, maybe not at 20 bucks a barrel, but we shouldn't see 100 ever again. Too bad for all those governments budgeting on that...

  • The Saudis hate the Iranians, and knew that sanctions would be lifted. Additionally, they knew that their influence would be deeply diminished by the world increasingly looking at Saudi Arabia's human rights violations and sponsorship of terrorist groups. If the world were to continue to lessen its dependence on oil, eventually sanctions against Saudi Arabia would become inevitable.

      It's because, Russia [bloombergview.com]. Saudi Arabia and the "terrorists" are providing a valuable service to the "West", especially Europe, though containment is becoming an issue.

  • One unanswerable question is the degree to which Obama is personally responsible for the current situation, and how much of it is just all the fertilizer hitting the air circulator because that's just what it does.
    I think Obama is a no-talent rodeo clown, but the exact degree to which anyone short of Jesus of Nazareth could have done better is unclear.
