Journal iminplaya's Journal: WOW! 8

Big jump in journal spamming. Though I'm sure some of you would like to see these things deleted and the accounts closed. Not me. Slashdot's big saving grace is that comments are not deleted, and journals only by their authors. I will never sign up to any site that edits or deletes user comments. Unlike mere moderation, that would be more akin to censorship. And anybody who calls for it is a fascist asshole.

  • The spammers usually start new accounts for each round of spamming anyways. It is rare to see journal spamvertising coming from an account that isn't in the newest 5% of accounts, and since accounts are free there is nothing to stop them from making new accounts to do more spamming.

Though it might be nice to have some sort of tagging / moderation system for the journal entries themselves, so that spam could be moderated down and people who like to browse the firehose for journal entries could more easily

I'm not sure if I'm confused or special, but when I go to people's journals I can moderate them up or down. My journal entries never make it into the red for some reason :\

I guess it might just be my experience with the system so far but I haven't seen any meaningful change brought about by journal moderation. Though I am usually browsing slashdot with all scripts disabled as their uber-craptacular javascript causes several orders of magnitude more pain than benefit from my experience.

I tag the bin spam as binspam as the system is supposedly supposed to work, but this information does not appear to come back out in any meaningful way. For instance, I should be able to search for journal -binspam or the like to receive journals that have not been tagged binspam. Instead, last I tried, I got an empty list, which tells me either it does not work, or someone tags everything in the firehose as binspam.

Knowing slashdot, I think that there's a reasonable chance that both are true.

        • There is a tag team at work here. I've seen a lot of the binspam modded up. But it still seems like a lot of work. So I'm getting suspicious that it's a botnet. I don't see a solution without the risk of censorship. Best to leave things as they are until there is one.

Didn't you notice the color-coded threat level system they have on the front page now? The system is in place. Now all we need is for it to work. Just kidding...it works just fine...if you're not using IE and you block their slow ass ad servers.

  • I only think Journals that take themselves seriously should be deleted. And any journal that has religious or political content.

I'll make sure to smile while spewing my bile and hatred :)
