What the heck? Mod points?

Comments Filter:
  • I have heard that, from several folks in the tattered circle.

I once got Mods about 2x a month. Now, I think that I am delisted. There is either a troll-mod algorithm (tho' I have best Karma) or you get de-prioritised if you make the front page with a submission. Both apply.

10 points! I always seemed to need six... :-)

I remember back when they were creating the mod system Malda said he wanted the mods to be representative of the average reader of the site, not the average poster. Two very different groups, actually. So I think the more you post, the less likely you are to get mod points. The lurkers get them all.
      • I noticed the change to batches of ten mod points in mid-February. There were some people who were still getting them in sets of five at that point, though, so there might be another factor involved.

My activity went way down when most of the circle people left, and I started getting mod points again last summer, after a four-year hiatus. I would guess that they average your activity over a span of a couple of months, so that it takes some time for it to go back down to the acceptable range.

Of course you have to be logged in when you lurk to get credit I suspect (I think it even says that somewhere).

I've gotten 10 mod points several times now, but not consistently. I've gotten five at least once after I had first gotten ten.

My guess is that the system for giving them out is somewhat complex, and also subject to fairly regular tweaks.

Also my guess, is that /. readership is down, as is posting, as is people actually remembering to use the mod points they get (I've let mine expire twice recently
      • As primarily a lurker, I think lurkers DO get mod points more often. I get mod points approximately once a week (when I metamod every day). I think the shift from 5 to 10 mod points was about a month ago.

I hardly ever post anymore, and I have been getting 10 points fairly regularly. So basically I am being rewarded for not contributing I suppose???

Because you can't post and moderate in the same thread, the editors want to keep the people who post, posting; and the people who read, reading. Basically, it is a business strategy that tailors the freely contributed posts to the vastly larger lurker community.

Say, are you still in Albuquerque, Nizo? If so, drop me an email at my state address, seth.rightmer@state.nm.us.
  • Don't spend them all in on place! BTW, I wanted to thank you for all your previous posts on more personal issues. Life has been good, and interesting, and your posts certainly helped to get some discussions going. -OldSchool
  • I received 10 mod points once a few months ago as well. I have since received 5 mod points on several occasions. No idea why I had 10 the one time, but I haven't seen it since.

And for reasons even less clear I have had mod points with greater frequency lately. I think I've had mod points twice the past 4 weeks - maybe people are just tired of listening to me?
  • I've never gotten less than 10 since I got 10 the first time, but I've only gotten points a couple of times since then...

Don't ask what I did to deserve them, though I've been metamodding more often than normal.
