Journal ces's Journal: Is it just me? 11

Or does a bunch of stuff seem to be flaking out on da intraweb today?

First Amazon was timing out for about an hour this morning.

Then I get to work and find one of our backends barfed bad (ooo, cool! Oracle bug!). Not that I could be of much help as it is only my third day.

Now Multiply doesn't seem to be working.

Is it just me?

  • I don't know about Amazon, wasn't there.... Multiply has been in "maintenance mode" twice this night...
  • So maybe something is going on.

Or we're both just unlucky ...
  • Multiply is borked for me, too. Shows some image of a supposed new guestbook feature.

I thought we moved away from the dot to get more reliable service? :-/
    • That was on purpose.
Really. They had a notice up earlier that it would be down while they did an upgrade.
Oh, you now have a guestbook on your multiply homepage.
And a message in it. :-)

Why the heck didn't they do their "upgrade" during off hours? I hardly think around 3 PDT 6 EDT is the optimal time to be doing such things.

There is no optimal time to do such upgrades. Teh intarwebs is a world-wide network and pretty much any time you pick is the middle of the day somewhere. Suck it up dude - at least it isn't as bad as eBay doing their weekly maintenance on Friday in the late afternoon/early evening (ie, a prime time for auctions to end) as happens down here. 8^/

Still most sites have a low-traffic time, both daily and weekly. Somehow I doubt the period they picked was it.

My plan involving orbiting mirrors/shades to make it day and night everywhere at the same time would be an easy way to fix this problem. Plus no more stupid daylight savings. Hey it might even help with global warming......time to start searching for government grants!
  • The Christian Science Monitor and Multiply were both borked when I tried to go there, and everything else just seems kinda... off.
  • I've been having problems this afternoon since around 3 (Eastern). Examined all the "usual suspects" (my router, my ISP) and found no problems. Ran a traceroute on a few sites I was having problems with and confirmed my sneaking suspicion of a backbone peering issue. Upon checking an internet health report [internetpulse.net] around 5 pm, it looked like Cogent was having some MAJOR peering issues. Link is to a report for the last 4 hours, which makes it look a lot less serious than it was. Looking at the report for the last ho
  • But I thought Multiple never had problems. It certainly doesn't have any bugs (according to some) and is (supposedly) much more reliable than Slashdot! o_O

That does not compute.

Working...
