Submission + - New service lets you hitch a ride with private planes for cost of tank of gas (betaboston.com)

v3rgEz writes: A new service, Airpooler, matches pilots with passengers looking to head the same way. Since it's not an officially licensed charter service, prices are limited to roughly the passengers share of the gas, giving pilots a way to share the expense of enjoying the open blue and flyers a taste of their personal pilot.

Submission + - Inside the massive 2014 Winter Olympics WiFi network (networkworld.com)

alphadogg writes: Engineers are putting the final touches on a network capable of handling up to 54Tbps of traffic when the Winter Olympics opens on Feb. 7 in the Russian city of Sochi. The two locations where the Olympics will take place — the Olympic village in Sochi and a tight cluster of Alpine venues in the nearby Krasnaya Polyana Mountains — are completely new construction, so this project represents a greenfield environment for Avaya, the company heading up the project. In addition to investing in a telecom infrastructure, Russia is spending billions of dollars to upgrade Sochi’s electric power grid, its transportation system and even its sewage treatment facilities.

Submission + - First new top-level domains added to the root zone (computerworld.com.au)

angry tapir writes: The Internet – or at least its namespace – just got bigger. Four new top-level domains have been added to the Internet's root zone. The four new gTLDs all use non-Latin scripts: "web " in Arabic, "online" in Cyrillic, "sale" in Cyrillic, and "game" in Chinese. In total, the generic top-level domain process run by ICANN will result in expansion of top-level domains from 22 to up to 1400.

I think you're doing two things: 1.) Being dramatic; 2.) Applying your one experience to an entire system. I went to public school, thought it was great. I have relatives of all grades in public school now, and they're doing wonderfully. I certainly wouldn't "weep for this generation of public school children".

Our company bought 500 of them for a, now failed, project. I was really impressed. We got to play around with the Enterprise, Personal, and Basic. They work well with virtualized applications too. Virtualize that VPN client, put it on the stick, and you're good to go. By the way if anyone wants some for CHEAP, we've got a few :)

I agree with your statement, "if I make it to 60 under the same quality of life I have now, I'll be peachy fucking keen." Problem is if you keep drinking, smoking (cannabis), and smoking (tobacco) your quality of life won't be the same when you're 60. I was just like you at 23, I'm now 30. I had to quit smoking, developed asthma, and had to start a diet and exercise, put on 60 pounds. I've lost the weight and haven't smoked in 2 years. Let me tell you the 7 years were rough ones and I can feel them.

Of course we would. We had 8 years of evidence that they ran the most corrupt administration of all time. This is early on for Obama, if it becomes a theme, then I suspect we'll be saying it's all Obama's fault. "No, it doesn't. But, the GP's point is correct: if this had been a member of Bush's administration, this article would already have 500 comments of wailing about how it was Bush's fault, Cheney's fault, and the fault of neo-cons, the Illuminati, FBI, CIA, RIAA, MPAA, etc.... Can you say "partisan"? I knew you could."

I started at my current company two years ago. They had transformer names. The learning curve was a few months. Some made sense. Postal was the mail server and Rewind was the backup server. But Hound and Mirage were the DNS servers. We now do functional names, mostly for the outside consultants, makes things easier.
