Comment Go read her twitter feed (Score 1) 284

Padma twits on a regular basis and after working at cisco, reading her twits and an article by Chambers saying the office of CTO in cisco has 0 resources I feel pretty confident saying she's useless.

Seriously go read what she has posted, her job at Cisco consists of going to events that Chambers can't be bothered to attend. She doesn't manage anyone, she doesn't accomplish anything and her leaving Cisco would only cause a brief shuffling of HR records to note she's no longer receiving an inflated salary and options.

I tried to find a project she has headed or something she has accomplished during her time at Cisco, can't find a single thing pretty amazing to have such a high profile position and yet accomplish nothing.

If you are not aware of the work of Weston Price into nutrition and the effects of following the dangerous path we currently walk as a society you should be! His book is available from the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation.

As for Vitamin D, try eating shrimp (and other sea foods) and the organ meats of animals (liver, kidney, etc. which were all commonly eaten in the recent past). These are the best sources, and they are available all year round.

The links between criminality and nutrition are absolutely fascinating. Things are not as they are meant to be. Things we call food are often no such thing.

"But what should I do if Amir or someone like him from a country associated with Bad Stuff posts on our own forums looking for technical advice?"

The whole thing is a what if, Amir designed and built the plane on his own without any help from the blogger. The blogger is simply afraid of what happens "if" Amir happens to ask a technical question and oh god help him he might give him an answer.

Iran certainly doesn't have any universities or access to technical books so this forum would be the only source they would have for such advanced knowledge.

I would suggest Chris stay far far away from anyone whose country might do "Bad Stuff" like invade other countries or I dunno torture people in secret prisons.

See Who Is Whitewashing Wikipedia 478

Decius6i5 writes "Caltech grad student Virgil Griffith has launched a search tool that uncovers whitewashing and other self-interested editing of Wikipedia. Users can generate lists of every edit to Wikipedia which has been made from a particular IP address range. The tool has already uncovered a number of interesting edits, such as one from the corporate offices of Diebold which removed large sections of content critical of their electronic voting machines. A Wired story provides more detail and Threat Level is running a contest to see who can come up with the most interesting Wikipedia spin job."

Bring Down Internet Explorer In Six Words 239

Marcion writes "Some handy Japanese guy called Hamachiya discovered a bug in Internet Explorer. Under certain conditions, an asterisk when used as a wildcard can crash IE as soon as the user attempts to go to another page." The article claims the "five HTML tags and a CSS declaration" crash IE7 as well as IE6, but I couldn't get IE7 to fail. This page says that as of June, IE6 was at about 37% market share and IE7 under 20%.

"Tubes" Senator Being Investigated For Corruption 613

DragonTHC writes "Senator Ted Stevens, Republican of Alaska, is being investigated in a federal corruption probe that has implicated his son Ben. Part of the case involves a fishing co-op whose members allegedly paid Ben Stevens $500,000 to get a federal bailout from his father." The other Alaskan senator, also a Republican, is under a cloud as well.

Fructose As Culprit In the Obesity Epidemic 821

drewtheman writes "According to an interview with Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology from the University of California, San Francisco, fructose, once touted as diabetic-friendly because it doesn't raise insulin levels directly, could be a major culprit for the obesity epidemic, high blood pressure, and elevated blood levels of LDL in Americans and others worldwide as they adopt American-style diets. Fructose comprises 50% of table sugar and up to 90% of high-fructose corn syrup, both ingredients found in copious quantity in most American prepared foods."

Latest Revelations on the FBI's Data Mining of America 446

An anonymous reader writes "You probably already knew that the FBI was data mining Americans in the "search" for potential terrorists, but did you know that they're also supposed to be looking for people in the U.S. engaged in criminal activity that is not really supposed to be the province of the federal government? Now the feds are alleged to be data mining for insurance fraudsters, identity thieves, and questionable online pharmacists. That's what they're telling us now. What else could they be looking for that they are not telling us about?"

White House E-mail Scandal Widens 839

Spamicles alerts us to a report just issued (PDF) by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. At least 88 White House officials used Republican National Committee email accounts for government business. The RNC has destroyed at least some of the emails from 51 of those officials. Law requires emails sent by officials to be stored or recorded. There is evidence that White House lawyers and the (current) Attorney General knew of this but did not act to stop it. From the article: "These e-mail accounts were used by White House officials for official purposes, such as communicating with federal agencies about federal appointments and policies... Given the heavy reliance by White House officials on RNC e-mail accounts, the high rank of the White House officials involved, and the large quantity of missing e-mails, the potential violation of the Presidential Records Act may be extensive."

Billions Face Risks From Climate Change 659

gollum123 writes with a link to a kind of grim BBC story. According to a report drawn up by 'hundreds of international environmental experts', billions of people face drought and famine, as well as an increase in natural disasters, as a result of climate change. Individuals in the poorest countries face the most danger, due to a lack of infrastructure and geographic location. "The scientific work reviewed by IPCC scientists includes more than 29,000 pieces of data on observed changes in physical and biological aspects of the natural world. Eighty-nine percent of these, it believes, are consistent with a warming world. Several delegations, including the US, Saudi Arabia, China and India, had asked for the final version to reflect less certainty than the draft."

48% of Americans Reject Evolution 1856

MSNBC has up an article discussing the results of a Newsweek poll on faith and religion among members of the US populace. Given the straightforward question, 'Is evolution well-supported by evidence and widely accepted within the scientific community?', some 48% of Americans said 'No'. Furthermore, 34% of college graduates said they accept the Biblical story of creation as fact. An alarmingly high number of individuals responded that they believe the earth is only 10,000 years old, and that a deity created our species in its present form at the start of that period.

jcatcw writes "Zune had potential, but 5 months in it barely gets passing grades. A Microsoft representative said, about the wireless concept: 'We felt we were addressing the social aspect of music, and the research we've done has shown that people understand the concept that wireless enables sharing ... but the tagline, while provocative, hasn't meant a lot to consumers.'"

US No Longer Technology King 815

An anonymous reader writes to tell us that according to a recent report from the World Economic Forum the US has lost the leading spot for technology innovation. The new reigning champ is now apparently Denmark with other Nordic neighbors Sweden, Finland and Norway all claiming top spots as well. "Countries were judged on technological advancements in general business, the infrastructure available and the extent to which government policy creates a framework necessary for economic development and increased competitiveness."
