Journal tuxette's Journal: tuxette's Thursday poll/survey 34

What is the weirdest or most unusual thing(s) you have ever eaten and/or drunken?

Note: by "weird" and/or "unusual" I mean weird/unusual for how you were raised and/or relative to where you come from. Or relative to "societal norms" (whatever they are)

  • Dry cat food.

Used to munch on it all the time as a little kid.

    Explains a lot, doesn't it?

    Don't answer that.

    Cheers,

    Ethelred

    • When I was a kid I used to eat chocolate dog treats, other than being a bit dry they're actually fairly good. Highly recommended with some toilet water.

    • Dude, you missed out, the canned was SO much better. ;-)

Uhh... weird stuff eh? I guess the weirdest thing I've ever eaten would be Uni (sea urhin). That or squirrel, depending on where you're from. That's right Squirrel Corps! I've eaten some of your soldiers!

    • Explains a lot, doesn't it?

You said it, not me ;-)

  • I've had wasabi tobeko, which is tobeko (flying fish roe) that has been soaked in wasabi. Good at clearing sinuses. Octapus. Bacalhau (salted cod, often fixed with potato, onion, boiled egg, and olives). McDonalds. Ginger ice cream and/or crystalized ginger.
    • Damn, that's one of my favorite dishes in the whole wide world. I'll have to throw a recipe into a JE some day (though it's boyfriend of tuxette who makes the baccalao around here). The versions I've had also include tomato and peppers and lots of cayenne pepper. Great with a nice young Portuguese red. Mmmmm!

Octopus (and squid too) are also very good.

      • Put it up, I'll pass it along to my mother. She makes it Portuguese style, but some pepper sounds interesting.
        • Hahaha...the Portuguese have many variants of bacalao. So I don't think there's any one "typical" style. I'll try to get something up when I get back from Tromsø (end of July).

Speaking of Norway, the Portuguese are big-time consumers of Norwegian klippfisk, the salted and dried cod used to make bacalao.

    • Damn, that's gross man. Don't write stuff like that this close to lunch time.

I've had Octapus and Eel and Squid, and just about anything that lives in the water. :-)

        Shark?

Put down that knife TechnoLust and back off now! I'll byte! ;-)

        • Shark?

I've had shark (though not the jawtheshark species) lots of times. It's quite delicious. Though I'm sure your girlfriend can tell you the same >:-)

          • Though I'm sure your girlfriend can tell you the same >:-)

That doesn't surprise me a bit! Heed my word, if my girlfriend nibbles too much on me, I'll byte back! ;-)

  • I stay far away from weird foods.

Okay, the weirdest thing I've ever eaten (and if you need any more fodder for your "why people are so fat" campaign, here it is): Deep fat fried Snickers bar. With a dollup of whipped cream.

*Shiver* Oh, the nastiness of it all. My parents bought one for the three of us to share at the State Fair. We each took one bite and tossed it in the trash. Presumably there are a few diabetic squirrels wandering around these parts now.

I said weirdest food, not grossest and nastiest ;-) But sometimes they're one in the same, eh?

I've heard those things are popular in Scotland, and I've even seen Nigella do deep fried Mars and Bounty bars on her show. I think I'm going to have to try them some day, just to do it.

Please do, but don't expect me to taste it :)

Let me guess -- at the Minnesota State Fair.

My parents bought one for the three of us to share at the State Fair.

Now how did I know that? ;-)

Somewhere I have a photo of that booth that I took this past summer -- I was too boggled to let THAT one go.

  • had a camel burger in Jordan.

I've eaten those same street tacos Sam mentioned above in TJ. YUM.

Uh, squirrel, rabbit, snake, frog, bear, and elk are some other unusual ones.
  • I know you're all curious...

Whale, seal, lutefisk (dried fish reconstituted in lye), rakfisk (fermented near-rotting fish), crocodile, snake, snails, all kinds of cuddly sea creatures, elk, moose, reindeer, horse, seagull eggs, durian, lamb's heart, cod tongues, cod liver, cricket burgers, chocolate-covered grasshoppers, fried mealworms... I'm sure there's much more but I can't recall them right now...

    • Hehehe I forgot to mention the foods I got to sample when I lived in Baton Rouge, Lousiana going often down to New Orleans. Stuff like gumbo and jambalaya that had aligator meat and various other wild game like quail, deer, rabbit, non-descript small mammals, and hell probably chunks of children sacraficed in some Voodon or Santeria human sacrafice heheheh. It was all awesome! The right blast of hot spices, odd strong game, and a good ice cold beer made all that food awesome.
  • It was gross, but my in-law's love the stuff.

I've also sweet breads. I wasn't sure what they were when I ordered them. They were horrible. I didn't find out they were cow glands till I got home.
  • There was this restaurant in Xiamen, China, where they served cat. Not really that good, it was chewy and tough meat, not very tasty either. And we weren't told what it was until afterwards.

Then there was the cat food incident of 1983.

When I was in the military on some weekend-long watch, I'd sometimes take some pieces of bread and cut into small dice, then fry them in a pan with RSP and an egg on top. DIY fast food in many ways.

Then one day a couple of years later, in late 1983, I was hungry, and had

Live scallop sushi. Not an experience I want to repeat.

    Alligator, pan-fried.

    Rattlesnake jerky, home-made.

Ice cream and bacon. (it's good, with vanilla).
  • I ate some flowers that were on the plate at my 21st... me and a friend were eating the petals, they were nice, but then looked at the centre, and poped it in, chewed... it tasted horrible, however i was able to convince my friend that it tasted nice, so that he ate the centre too... most horrible thing to eat in the world...

Maybe not weird, but as weird as i get

Oh a ate 3 raw eggs at once for a dare, quite nice actually.
  • I was born and raised in North Carolina, USA so what is considered weird by those that know me would be the Japanese fare that I experienced there and have since continued to love:

    sashimi
    sushi
odd veggies like soy beans, tofu, seaweed
odd dried food items like dried shrimp savory snacks, etc

and also even though it is a southern food item it is still kinda of rare, but I love Okra. I like it especially battered and fried. YummY!

But I usually eat some sushi every week and many people I know think I am freak.
  • horse steaks fried in a pan with olive oil...bit like a mixture between beef and liver...

once i ate a chocolate dog biscuit...needless to say that i'll never be doing that again...rank
