  • I'd have to say cheese because chocolate is a pseudo-sexual experience; while cheese is awesome, it's just a chunk of fat. ;)

We have this place around Chicago called Trader Joe's and they sell imported chocolate truffles from Belgium for $3 I think. Each one tastes like a million bucks. They're VERY rich, dark chocolate and they melt into silk in your mouth. They're SO good. My friend brought me a dark chocolate from Germany that was really incredible and I hope I come across it when I visit there som
  • Favourite Chocolate:- Hmmm. Does Snickers count?

Cheese:- my lack of subject knowledge might show up here :-), but that red-coated one with holes in it...? Think it's called Apfunzel Cheese, from a canton by the same name in Switzerland.

  • I could live without cheese. It is mostly the "Lettere Norvegia" (a low-fat yellow-white solid cheese) I eat with any regularity nowadays. And mozarella on pizza, but I could imagine dealing with reasonable substitutes there.

Chocolate, however, would be a lot harder to quit. Most anything of unfilled chocolates from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Switzerland etc. will do nicely, thank you! Light or dark, I'll have them all!

    • My parents and brothers always request it when I visit; they usually get Sphinx or Kong Haakon or both. They can't get anything like it in the US.

I've also brought them Anthon Berg (Danish) stuff (the plum&madeira and strawberries&champagne marzipan chocolates); always a hit.

      • When I was living in San Jose, I'd frequently go to the Seamen's Church in San Francisco or the Nordic Foods store in Oakland and stock up on Freia's chocolate, (Milk Chocolate in yellow packages, or the dark "Dronning-Sjokolade") as well as some other goodies.

So these things are not completely unobtainable in the US, but it depends on where you start out. I know there are places near Seattle that sell them as well, and there are probably some in New York and Minnesota, but that still leaves out a lot of

  • i think my favorite cheese would have to be cream cheese. especially when it's made into cheesecake. so i'll sacrifice chocolate for cheesecake. romano pecorino on macaroni is good too.
  • I'm a camembert kind of gal, and i've got a brick and a half of goot El Rey Bittersweet in my fridge. I have ha friend who's a chocolate snob, and i think there's gonna be a lot more chockie in my future, even if i give it up for 40 days...

I'd give up cheese in a heartbeat. I eat chocolate every day- cheese just isn't that ubiquitous in my diet. But i actually dreamt of camambert last night, so i think i'll have to pick some up this weekend...

    • For some reason I'm not too keen on camembert unless it's warm/baked. We have some camembert here that's 1 month over the "best before" date, so I guess we'll have some baked camembert this weekend :-)
      • I'm fond of it. I had to be forced to try it, though. I mean to try brie one of these days, but it's too squishy for me to think of as edible most of the time. I'm also fond of mozzarella, and i like a good, mild cheddar from time to time.

Oh, and a nice soft monterey for making omelettes.

Swiss is nice- did i ever tell you how there's the running myth in my family that olives grow in the holes in swiss cheese?

Wensleydale... ah, wensleydale... and a spot of jaetost with a glass of red wine... i like to

    • I'm a camembert kind of gal,

Mm... hot breaded camembert with a cranberry dip? Amazing stuff... (pauses to wipe drool off keyboard)

I think I'd have to say chocolate: I'm not particularly attached to either, but I do like both...

  • I've cut out chocolates between meals, and almost all cheeses with the exception of goats cheese and pecorino (to go on pasta). I don't think I could give up either of them indefinitely, though.

As for favourites, chocolate should be as dark as possible, so dark you have to have it in small pieces at a time. And you can't go wrong with creme fraise and ricotta, goes well with everything. Mmmm.

    -MT.
    • I don't think I could give up any of them indefinitely either, though I'm more of a cheese addict than a chocolate addict. Except for because of the occasional hormonal swing, I really don't care for sweets anymore.
  • fav. chocolate would be Valrhona *Carrre di Guanaja* (*only* 70% cocoa, but I've find the textures of 85% cocoa chocolates leaves something to be desired).

fav. cheese would have to be good old fashioned parmigiano reggiano, pasta wouldn't be the same without it and since I couldn't do without pasta, I would have to drop the chocolate.
  • Dude.(ette)

Chocolate sucks compared to the sweety cheesy goodness that is well, cheese.

I bet you eat a ton more cheese than chocolate.

*sigh* Guess the valentines day shit is getting to people.

    no more cheese dip
    no more cheese cake
    no more scrambled cheese eggs
    no more mac-n-cheese
    no more cheesy baked 'taters
    no more Philly Cheese steaks
    no more Ham-n-cheese sam-a-chez
    no more cheese?

    Are you kidding me?

    Chocolate:

No more, oh wait, Em doesn't eat desserts anyway.
  • I would give up chocolate. I don't think I could live without cheese.

I'm also a big fan of very dark chocolate (70%+). I usually take it straight-up but I also like chocolate with hazlenuts or orange peel or raspberry.

Favorite cheeses hmmm. Where do I begin? I generally like smelly strong-flavored cheeses with medium consistency. To throw out some names of favorites: appenzeller, aged cheddar, aged gouda, tilseter, chevre, parmesean, manchego, munster, brie...

  • I love cheese.

In fact, it's easier to say what kinds of cheese I don't like than what I do like...

Favorite cheeses: Jarlsberg (mainly for sandwiches or with Wasa bread), Leerdammer (good on melted sandwiches), aged Gouda (good on anything), fresh Mozzarella (which is quite different from the "mozzarella" one sees in American grocery stores...), Turkish soft sheep's cheese (sort of like Feta, awesome on pita bread), and Cheddar (which again is a bit different from the American variety).

    I also like fres

  • But I COULD never live without cheese
  • I could easily go without chocolate.

Being Italian, I like (surprise!) italian cheese. My fav is baby Mozarella, but mostly because its on my favorite sandwich (baby moz, roasted red peppers, prosciutto, capacola ham, salami, with mayo on freshly baked italian bread.... *drool*).

But I'm also a giant fan of the other 'smells like feet' italian cheeses like moz, provalone, and even the softies like, well, baby moz and ricotta.

I am also quite partial to cheddar and swiss (especially with halapenios).
    • That sandwich sounds divine!

I really need to go to Italy, for the explicit purpose of eating and drinking myself to death. And speaking of good things Italian, the second batch of boyfriend of tuxette's limoncello will be ready this weekend. Woohoo!

    • You fail it.

Jalapenos, FK. Jalapenos. Gotta love that phonetic spelling.

Of course, you could say them like Alton.

      Hala Peenos.

Uh. No. It's Hala-Peyn-yos....silly white boy.

Tell Mekka he needs to stop learning and start pissing.

      wow. I'll stop now.

      toodles.
  • Unless by chocolate you mean that dark stuff. I could give that up, except that giving up suggests current consumption.

    Mmmm...chocolate.
  • I like both, and I eat more cheese than chocolate, but I've been able to give up cheese before.

But when I've got a craving for chocolate, there's *nothing* that will substitute.

    ....Bethanie....
  • Just picture my head turning to the left and right so fast it's just a blur (like Beavis and Butthead cartoons) with cheese on one side and chocolate on the other. But I think my answer would be chocolate Pizza has cheese on it. I can't NOT have pizza in my life. I eat it twice a week. I'm so into pizza I have my own pizza stone and make my own crust (with Spelt flour and no yeast). Also want to point out that I'm not fat because I make the stuff myself. Of course I also make my own chocolate icecream
  • A lot of people seem to think Tillamook Cheese [tillamookcheese.com] is the best cheese in the world. It's not fancy cheese for special occasions, it's just normal everyday cheese (although it's good for special occasions too). I know of a discount grocery store around here that sells a 2lb Baby Loaf for $4.99; most places have it for around $6.99-$7.99. Should be available throughout most of the US; may not be available elsewhere.

Don't ask me what's so good about it; I can't tell you. I live a little over 2 hours from Till
