Happy Canada Day everybody!

  • Forgive my US ignorance, but what is Canada Day? Can I assume its your independence day, or is it just a day to celebrate your country?

I always hate when I hear about celebrations in other countries that I know nothing about. I try not to fall into the US centric point of view but it its not always easy. Any insights you could give would be great;-)

      From this site [pch.gc.ca]:

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st.

I had heard of this before, but didnt' really know what it was... so I looked it up :)
      • Yeah yeah yeah, they just want to steal our thunder (literal) on 4th of July by beating us to it. Those evil mean Canadian bastards!!!

        Happy Canada day. ;)

It memorializes the first bottle of Molson's, of course.

Or was that the first slab of back bacon? I forget.

      • re: back bacon

Why do Americans call it Canadian Bacon?

Do American pigs not have backs?
        • Why do canadians say Zee as Zed? That's the french way, I mean, you don't call X egreks or B Beh do ya?

Tomato, Tamata, let's call the whole thing offff.....

Well, Zed is the original English pronunciation. Americans just figured that the alphabet should rhyme when you sing it.

Anyway, I wasn't asking why you called it something different than we do. I was wondering why it was Canadian. I mean, what makes one piece of the pig more Canadian than the rest of it?

              Must...resist...

Well, it's from the pig's loins, that is, backside of the pig. You know, the pig's ass. Seems appropriate. Hah!

AAAAARGH! That was too obvious! DAMMIT! I really shouldn't do that to our friends in the Great White North. Now I'm gonna get it...

Though actually, more seriously, it's called variously "Irish bacon", "Irish ham", "Canadian bacon", "back bacon" and so on. In Germany it's Kasseler IIRC. What it has to d

              • Well, actually, the buttocks of the pig are included in the leg (e.g. ham). The loin is actually the back from behind the shoulders to a bit forward of the hips. this is the best diagram I could find [grillmeats.com] but it gets the idea across.

I guess it is the northenmost part of the pig.

Now I'm wondering what "spare ribs" are really? Are they really spare? Could they be harvested and the pig could go on living a normal life?

Ya, I know -- I was playing with words ("backside").

What's a good insult worth if it doesn't malign the truth a little? ;-)

    Yay Canada!

So why is it that google.ca has a cute graphic for Canada Day, but when you go to google.com, it doesn't show up -- and YET, on July 4th, we all know that both google.us AND google.com AND google.ca will show fireworks & an american flag? hmmmmmmmmm?

(not that I mind seeing the american flag for american independence day on the canadian version of google - I just wish they would go the other way too - at least it would educate some of the masses that places other than the US have become independent at some time...)

Besides, the loon is very cute (-:

    • What? There are places OUTSIDE the US? You mean, besides vacation destinations? Who'da thunk it!? ;-)
      • I'm shocked. I mean, I knew there were countries outside the US, but this assertion that Canada is one of them, why it's preposterious!

Nice try, we all know Canada is a US Territory. *

        * - Ack, just kidding, please don't come down and burn the white house again... err... wait...
        • I'll have you know that we are very independent. We have our own television programs (that suck) and our own airline (that's going bankrupt) and lots of people you think are cool are Canadian (but they live in the US)... um... well... we have maple walnut timbits, so THERE!

          Ha, told you...

  • It's a nice day for a holiday, here, at any rate. Hopefully it won't rain!

How are (Canadian) folks celebrating today? (Aside from hanging out on /., of course!)

(I'm not doing anything too exciting - friends have invited us over for a BBQ, and I'm sure we'll enjoy some good Canadian beer ...)
