One of the straight pick up models as opposed to the fully enclosed ones. I wouldn't drive it a lot, but a really *stout* stock 4wd with good ground clearance and very good off road traction is useful here on occasion. I just can't drop 50 or 70 grand on one.

Since the frame is part of the suspension system, you get less body roll when one wheel goes over an 18" rock, etc.

I almost bought a Ferret once, but then changed my mind thinking about parts. Seems...the dude wanted seven grand or so. heh, armored car..heh heh heh every boy *needs* one! The unimogs are nice, but still, parts.
There's some guys a few counties over from me sell all sorts of used mil vehicles, puchs, unimogs, etc. but folks I know who have gotten them have problems eventually with parts, hard to get, real dang expensive when you get them. Governments can afford that I guess...

Grandfather had an early post war IH truck. Reportedly capable of towing 12,000 lbs. with no fuss.

Nope. Only the H1 is nice. The H2 is the rebodied Suburban, the H3 is a rebodied Colorado/S-10.
Not sure, but IIRC, the H1 has never had a decent powerplant. Oops, according to Wikipedia, the 2006 finally had a Duramax.

Thanks for the correction. I drive by a natguard armory on the way to town all the time and have serious lust for their toys. They have a buncha real hummvees, plus some huge pointy nose trucks of some make I am not familiar with, but they look pretty rad. Sort of like a boat nose on them, with a prow. Well, I have one guess, oshkosh makes heavy duty stuff like that, so I will go look..

Poor Jack's insecurity about his penis size probably persists. He's either still driving the Hummer or has bought whatever the latest "must have" douchemobile is.
I still remember the first time I saw a luxury SUV in the SF Bay Area. I was crossing the street and I saw this SUV with some luxury brand (don't remember which). They were focused on three things.
1. The monthly payment (stretched out from 3 years to own outright, to a 4-year lease with a buyback at the end, cut the payments by more than half, so they could "own" more SUV)
2. "Keeping up with the Jones."
3. "The more you owe, the more you can borrow" mentality of debt as income.

After all, the top selling hummers were first the H3, then the H2, which each sold a lot more than the H1. Being as the H2 and H3 each shared a lot of parts with other GM vehicles, the owners of them won't have much difficulty finding parts once their beloved vehicles are no longer being built.
