Comment Windows 8 start menu did it first! (Score 1) 120

Microsoft was lucky that performance of windows 8.1 was quite good and the GUI/start menu ads was dealt with classic shell. Windows 8.1 64 bit actually uses less ram than windows 7 sp1 64bit. I wonder how much less ram 8.1 would have of used if it didn't include the crappy RT API vs just the win32/64 bit api?

Comment My personal exchange server got pwned as well (Score 5, Interesting) 47

I run a personal server that I try things out on before doing it professionally and happened to setup exchange 2019 a month ago. Whatever variant I got encrypted every dir the user had access too and left a ransomed txt file saying pay 10k to unecrypt your files. Luckily it didn't have enough permission to touch the windows/programs app directory so the damage was minimum. I knew something was up when a exe file with a random long name was taking up abunch of CPU. Microsoft antivirus didnt detect the exe files at the time but it does now... Avast detected it before microsofts.

Submission + - Linux 5.4 released

diegocg writes: Linux 5.3 has been released, featuring the new kernel lockdown mode, intended to strengthen the boundary between UID 0 and the kernel; virtio-fs, a high-performance virtio driver which allows a virtualized guest to mount a directory that has been exported on the host; fs-verity, for detecting file tampering, like dm-verity, but works on files rather than block devices; dm-clone, which allows live cloning of dm targets; two new madvise() flags for improved app memory management on Android, support for new Intel/AMD GPUs, support for the exfat file system and removing the experimental status of the erofs file system; a new haltpoll cpuidle driver and governor that greatly improves performance for virtualized guests wanting to do guest-side polling in the idle loop; and blk-iocost, a new cgroup controller that attempts to calculate more accurately the cost of IO. As always, many other new drivers and improvements can be found in the changelog.

Their words:

Every version of Windows 10 adds new features and functionality; occasionally we also remove features and functionality, often because we’ve added a better option. Below are the details about the features and functionalities that are no longer being developed in Windows 10. For information about features that have been removed, see Features we removed.

The features described below are no longer being actively developed, and might be removed in a future update. Some features have been replaced with other features or functionality and some are now available from other sources.

Take a look at some of the more prominent Windows 10 features that will be going away soon..

Submission + - Police can keep Ring camera video forever, and share with whomever they'd like (washingtonpost.com)

schwit1 writes: Police in those communities can use Ring software to request up to 12 hours of video from anyone within half a square mile of a suspected crime scene, covering a 45-day time span, Huseman(Amazon’s vice president of public policy) wrote. Police are required to include a case number for the crime they are investigating, but not any other details or evidence related to the crime or their request.

Ring allows users to decline police requests for video and does not directly identify them based on their refusal, which Huseman wrote would “eliminate the pressure implicit in receiving an inperson request from police.” “Users must expressly choose to assist police, the same way they would traditionally answer the door or respond to a public request for tips,” he added.
