Submission + - Is Going to an Elite College Worth the Cost? (nytimes.com)

Pickens writes: "Jacques Steinberg writes in the NY Times that the sluggish economy and rising costs of college have only intensified questions about whether expensive, prestigious colleges make any difference. Do their graduates make more money? Get into better professional programs? Make better connections? And are they more satisfied with their lives, or at least with their work? Researchers say that alumni of the most selective colleges earn, on average, 40 percent more a year than those who graduated from the least selective public universities, as calculated 10 years after they graduated from and found that “attendance at an elite private college significantly increases the probability of attending graduate school, and more specifically graduate school at a major research university.” But other researchers say the extent to which one takes advantage of the educational offerings of an institution may be more important, in the long run, than how prominently and proudly that institution’s name is being displayed on the back windows of cars in the nation’s wealthiest enclaves. “Everything we know from studying college student experiences and outcomes tells us that there is more variability within schools than between them,” says Alexander C. McCormick. “The quality of that biology major offered at School No. 50? It may exceed that at School No. 5.”"

Submission + - No Sex Please, We're Microsoft 2

theodp writes: Microsoft's Kinect has been out for less than two months and already there's an adult company looking to produce a 3-D sex game for the Xbox 360 console (PG-13ish YouTube demo). But Microsoft immediately shot down any speculation that the game will pass the certification process. 'This isn't the first example of a technology being used in ways not intended by its manufacturer, and it won't be the last," a Microsoft spokesman said in a statement. 'Microsoft did not authorize or license its technology for this use. Xbox is a family friendly games and entertainment console and does not allow Adults Only (AO) content to be certified for use on its platform, and would not condone this type of game for Kinect.'

Submission + - UK to block all internet porn (news.com.au)

airfoobar writes: Yet another country wants to "protect the children" by blocking all internet porn — not just child porn, all porn. The British gov will talk with ISPs next month to ask them to make porn blocking mandatory (and they appear more than happy to comply). As an effect, adults who want to access pornography through their internet connections will have to "opt in". Their rationale is that if ISPs have managed to block all child porn, they'll also be able to block all other porn as well.

When parental controls exist for users to do this on their own, why does the gov want to get involved? Why not let users choose if they want such a service or not? This is how you bring internet censorship in: by gradually blacklisting sites that most people won't pipe up to defend. Welcome to the age of Her Majesty's Great Firewall.
