If he's close to retirement then he absolutely should get the degree.

Do you know how social security payments work? If he hasn't maxed out his payments then a degree could do that.

If he doesn't have a zillion dollars socked away for retirement then a degree could get him a few extra $10k before he retires.

Also, depending on where he goes, he might get other benefits for his kids or their kids as an alum.

A degree might do him a lot depending on his circumstances, which neither of us is certain of.

Unlike those assholes who posted before me, I have actual possibly beneficial advice for you.

Talk to your boss about getting a degree. They might help pay for it, give you time off or shorter hours to get it, and give you a raise/promotion once you get it.

Some places still value their employees and provide training / education budgets and encourage self improvement. You might have to agree to stick around for X many years after to keep the money they spent on your education but if you like where you're at that's no big deal anyway.

5.3% is still historically considered near full employment but here's the usual slashdot gullible lefty crowd going off like it's a full blown depression when 19 of 20 new grads has a job.

If that DEI ditzbomb got in you'd all be saying how awesome the economy is because 19 of 20 new grads got a job so quickly including the basket weavers and race and women's "study" majors who have zero marketable skills.

You're all so predictable, living in your little lefty echo chamber of gullibility convinced that a strong economy is the next depression because the wrong guy is in office.

Let's see, who to blame for this really good situation for new grads? The usual slashdot suspects blame:
Trump, of course, living 24x7 rent free as always,
White people, because white people uh something something racism, historic oppression, privilege, something,
Boomers, because retired people aren't hiring new grads,
GenX who is such a tiny group compared to the demographics before and after them they barely exist in comparison,
The rich, because we need to kill and eat them so more poor people can create jobs because uh sure yeah poor people create so many jobs or something.

I graduated into a recession. It was actually hard to get a job, any job, for most new grads. This article is bullshit. We would've killed for a 5.3% unemployment rate. Ridiculous.

These 1 in 20 kids who can't get a job are dumb as bricks with shitty degrees studying their own skin color, graduated with bottom end GPA or they're applying to jobs they aren't qualified for. They should go pick lettuce. That's a job literally millions of people from around the world have fought hard to come here to do. They should be proud to be the best lettuce picker in the field. If they work hard enough they can get promoted after 2-3 years to tomatoes.

This cry baby bullshit makes me sick.

So naive. Why would we or should we even consider sharing anything with evil totalitarian regimes which mass murder and rape their own people? You think the world is horrible today? Lmao, you'd shit a brick about how bad it will be if the current Chinese government ever takes the US's place as global super power.

Maybe you'll get lucky and you won't be pulled off the street so your organs can be 'donated' to keep some octogenarian Chinese leader alive another few months.
Or your wife won't have a Chinese manager moved into her bed while you're in prison.
Or you won't be on an innocent fishing boat in your own internationally recognized waters when a Chinese navy ship comes along side and threatens to sink you if you don't go home and clears the area for Chinese fishing boats.
Or you won't have an island off shore your coast line well within your internationally recognized territorial waters turned into a Chinese military base.
Or you won't be one of 50+ million starved to death due to horrible stupid communist land management policies.
Or you won't own some technology they'll simply take and undercut your business with government funds putting your idea on the market at below your cost to manufacture.
Or you won't be a citizen of some third world country with leaders who get bribed to sign off on the corrupt Belt and Road Initiative which generally results in the Chinese owning all your country's natural resources while your country goes deep into debt to pay for infrastructure you don't even own built by imported Chinese workers so you didn't even get any short term jobs from those projects.

Real history involves not just repeating facts or "facts" or intelligent and experience based interpretation and extrapolation to write a reasonably believable and likely accurate-enough story.

Even without intentional bias and politics every story has multiple perspectives and pov, which are accurate to some degree but not necessarily right or wrong.

History is not science. Most historians just do their best with what they've got to work with from materials that survived to present but much more often with second or even third generation sources written much much later than the events.

This took all of 3 seconds to type into google and copy/paste and this isn't the full list of free money and other assistance programs available to the poor. You can blather all you like about poor starving kids. The number one health issue of poor Americans, including kids, is not hunger, it is being fat. As in, too much food. More calories in than out. Not starving. This is the only time and place in all of human history where being fat is highly indicative of being poor. If you believe American kids are starving due to lack of free food you're just gullible and ignorant.

I'll excuse your ignorance and ad hominem. Most rich liberals like yourself have no idea how much money is going out the door to poor people, especially those with kids. I'm not going to bother looking it up because I know you don't care but at last check, there were 31 programs available to single mothers which covers a lot of these poor fat kids. Go virtue signal on someone else's time. The facts do not back up your boo-hoo-ism. If there's a starving American kid, it's because his 'parents' aren't feeding him, not because they aren't getting enough money to do so. Starving your kids is abuse. Too bad you can't figure that out. You feel (not think but feel) that throwing more money at poor abused kids will fix everything, it wont fix anything. Like education, there is plenty of money but the adults involved too often are trash and don't give a damn about the kids. The only thing money will fix is your sense of rich liberal guilt about a problem that doesn't even exist.

I'm not going to engage any further on this with you. It's a waste of my time. You don't know what you're talking about. Go spend 5 minutes to educate yourself. Do better.

Here's the short list:

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program):

TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families):

WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children):
.
Provides supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant women, new mothers, and young children.
Head Start:
.
A comprehensive child development program for children from birth to age 5, including those experiencing homelessness or in foster care, according to The Administration for Children and Families (.gov).
Child Care Assistance:
.

Housing Assistance:

Are there kids going hungry? Maybe.

Is there a -financial- reason for that? No. We give out tons of free food money to everyone who needs it and many who don't.

If those kids still aren't eating it's because their parents aren't feeding them. If they aren't being fed with all that free food then quite likely they're being neglected or out right abused in other ways as well and our responsibility as a civil society us to rescue those children from abuse at home, not to slap a bandaid over it with additional free food at school and feel good about ourselves over a badly made sandwich and a sour apple.
