I'm okay. I have a double story house

Last time I checked, a 20-foot wave would roll over the top of most two storey houses.

Hence the boat. But I am in Melbourne anyway. The wave would have to do a 270 degree turn around the eastern Victorian coast, traverse the heads of Port Philip bay, charge up the Yarra to Dights Falls, then surge up the Merri creek to East Brunswick, by which time I expect it to be about one micron high.

Bit of a problem for Taiwan and the Philippines though,

You might be safe, but I'm in North Carlton. It could easily be 1.02 microns high here. Aaaaaargh! But not quite seriously, it was amusing hearing tv commentators listing all the countries that had "tsunami warnings". I mean _mexico_?? 'Gimme a break!'

Canadian Blood Services Promotes Pseudoscience 219

trianglecat writes "The not-for-profit agency Canadian Blood Services has a section of their website based on the Japanese cultural belief of ketsueki-gata, which claims that a person's blood group determines or predicts their personality type. Disappointing for a self-proclaimed 'science-based' organization. The Ottawa Skeptics, based in the nation's capital, appear to be taking some action."

Smile! Urine Candid Camera! 370

Anon E. Muss writes "Just because you can put a camera somewhere doesn't mean you should. Apparently, the Department of Homeland Security doesn't grasp this concept. They've installed video cameras in urinals at Houston's Hobby Airport. At least they weren't sneaky about it — they posted a notice saying 'Automatic infrared flush sensors also provide video monitoring for security purposes.' (Insert bad joke about bashful bladder syndrome here)."

Submission + - Australia to build fibre to the premises network

candiman writes: The Australian PM, Kevin Rudd, has just announced that none of the private sector submissions to build a National Broadband Network were up to the standard so instead the Govt is going to form a private company to build a fibre to the premises network.

The network will connect to 90% of premises delivering 100Mb/s. The remaining 10% will be reached with wireless and satellite delivering up to 12Mb/s.

The network has been costed at AUD43B over the 8 years of construction — and is expected to employ 37000 people at peak. It will be wholesale only and completely open access.

As an Australian who voted for the other guys all I can say is wow.

Belgian ISP Scores Victory In Landmark P2P Case 76

secmartin writes "Belgian ISP Scarlet scored an important victory in the first major European test of copyright law. The interim decision forcing them to block transfers of copyrighted materials via P2P has been reversed, because the judge agreed with Scarlet that the measures the Belgian RIAA proposed to implement proved to be ineffective. A final decision is expected next year."

Google Launches User-Driven Debate Site 68

Tyndmyr writes "In conjunction with the previously covered Knol system, Google has recently released Knol Debates, where users can vote for and discuss various topics. First up, presidential debates, representing topics from any party, and with some commentary being given by the libertarian Cato Institute. Unfortunately, patent law and technology questions are still rather poorly represented. Oddly enough, Knol Debates doesn't even appear to be in beta. The system makes use of Google Moderator to select questions."
