Last time I checked, a 20-foot wave would roll over the top of most two storey houses.

Hence the boat. But I am in Melbourne anyway. The wave would have to do a 270 degree turn around the eastern Victorian coast, traverse the heads of Port Philip bay, charge up the Yarra to Dights Falls, then surge up the Merri creek to East Brunswick, by which time I expect it to be about one micron high.

Bit of a problem for Taiwan and the Philippines though,

You might be safe, but I'm in North Carlton. It could easily be 1.02 microns high here. Aaaaaargh! But not quite seriously, it was amusing hearing tv commentators listing all the countries that had "tsunami warnings". I mean _mexico_?? 'Gimme a break!'

They've installed video cameras in urinals at Houston's Hobby Airport. At least they weren't sneaky about it — they posted a notice saying 'Automatic infrared flush sensors also provide video monitoring for security purposes.' (Insert bad joke about bashful bladder syndrome here)."

candiman writes: The Australian PM, Kevin Rudd, has just announced that none of the private sector submissions to build a National Broadband Network were up to the standard so instead the Govt is going to form a private company to build a fibre to the premises network.

The network will connect to 90% of premises delivering 100Mb/s. The remaining 10% will be reached with wireless and satellite delivering up to 12Mb/s.

The network has been costed at AUD43B over the 8 years of construction — and is expected to employ 37000 people at peak. It will be wholesale only and completely open access.

As an Australian who voted for the other guys all I can say is wow.
