Journal Journal: The Slashdot Firehose

Well, I guess it's my turn to weigh in on the "new" Slashdot firehose.

I like it.

There's not that much to say, really. It provides what I consider a nice, clean interface to lots of potentially interesting stories and data from a wide variety of sources. However, there's also garbage to wade through (real men browse at Black).

First Armed Robots on Patrol in Iraq 661

An anonymous reader writes "Robots have been roaming Iraq, since shortly after the war began. Now, for the first time — the first time in any war zone — the 'bots are carrying guns. The SWORDS robots, armed with M249 machine guns, "haven't fired their weapons yet," an Army official says. "But that'll be happening soon." The machines have actually been ready for a while, but safety concerns kept them off the battlefield. Now, the robots have kill switches, so "now we can kill the unit if it goes crazy," according to the Army. I feel safer already."

Journal Journal: Physical Security in a Star Trek Universe 1

There was a program recently on Star Trek(*) technology and its influence on real inventions, I believe on the Discovery channel. The section on the transporter and my experience in high security environments (the Pentagon, pharma research labs, etc.) got me thinking on the staggering implications such a device would have on physical security of sensitive facilities.
