Trump Fires TVA Chair, Cites Hiring of Foreign Workers (apnews.com) 267

schwit1 writes: President Trump announced the removal of Tennessee Valley Authority's chair James Thompson and board member Richard Howoth and called for the removal of their CEO Bill Johnson. This was in response to the company laying off employees and hiring H1-B visa holders. [TVA announced it would outsource 20% of its technology jobs to companies based in foreign countries, which could cause more than 200 highly skilled American tech workers in Tennessee to lose their jobs to foreign workers, according to the White House.] During the round table discussion, it was announced the company is willing to reverse course and rehire previously laid off employees. The president also said he would not ban the TikTok app if Microsoft or another company bought it before September 15th. "The TVA is a federally owned corporation created in 1933 to provide flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing and economic development to the Tennessee Valley, a region that was hard hit by the Great Depression," reports The Associated Press. "The region covers most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky as well as small sections of Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia."

Trump said the new chief executive officer must "[put] the interests of Americans first," adding: "The new CEO must be paid no more than $500,000 a year. We want the TVA to take action on this immediately. [...] Let this serve as a warning to any federally appointed board: If you betray American workers, you will hear two words: 'You're fired.'"

The announcement was made as Trump signed an executive order to require all federal agencies to complete an internal audit to prove they are not replacing qualified American workers with people from other countries. According to the White House, the order will help prevent federal agencies from unfairly replacing American workers with lower cost foreign labor.

Comment Please stop posting India related stories (Score 0) 108

Most of the comments to any India related stories are only about a handful of topics that includes:

* H1Bs and how lousy Indians are at coding
* Public defecation (even though the topic is not about that)
* Third world country

Pretty much 90% of the comments are negative. This is not really adding any value to the discussion, so I hope people will refrain from posting stories about India.

Have you been to India? Or do you just gobble up whatever your biased western media tells you?
Everyone here automatically makes this lame argument/joke without knowing the reality. Do you have actual statistics about this? Can you cite a study?
Are you aware of the awareness campaigns and efforts taken by the current Indian government to combat this? Did you know of a case where there was a divorce awarded to a women because her husband's family didn't have a toilet at home (only an outside one)?

Change doesn't occur overnight. Especially when it involves that many amount of people. But it is happening slowly. In fact I would argue compared to the current political state of the US we are moving forward while the US is moving backward.

This is not limited to India or Indians. It takes time to get assimilated. As many of you might know, India is a very diverse country with a wide variety of languages. Pretty much each state in India has its own language after the States Reorganisation Act, 1956 when the states were separated based on linguistics. So even in India when a large number of people from a different state move, they tend to stick together and talk their own languages. Many people from different states talk in English to communicate with each other. I'm not stating this as an excuse, just stating it as a fact.

as the buses I ride to work fill up with them,
it is hard not instinctually feel repulsion towards them
it does start to feel like hatred sometimes.

Does your repulsion and hatred stem from their language/culture/skin color? Because if any of this is true, it is no different than the hatred towards black people on racial basis or hatred towards LGBT people on sexual orientation basis. I understand there is a problem with fraud and abuse, but I have seen the hatred against the government policies or against the companies translate in to hatred against Indians since, as you have aptly stated we are the "face". A very recent incident which was posted here as well is the murder of an Indian in Kansas.

From the comments in slashdot over the years and indeed in the comments in this post as well, it indicates that many people are affected by the H1-B program abuse.

But instead of just voicing their concerns on a website, why don't people report it to the authorities if they witness H1-B fraud.

They have a website giving instructions on what to do and a form that needs to be filled and submitted.

Link: https://www.dol.gov/whd/forms/...
Form: https://www.dol.gov/whd/forms/...

Why are people not doing this?

And why does the H1-B hate invariably translate to hate towards Indians?
