Journal subgeek's Journal: not to be unpatriotic 13
i mean it not as a slight against my homeland, but as a simple statement of aesthetics. the american flag is ugly. it is too busy, with 50 stars covering less than 1/4 of the total area of the design. i suppose it has the benefit of being instantly recognizable, but that doesn't make it good design. not that we should switch to three stripes of red, white, and blue. it would look too much like an existing national flag. but even if we insisted on using a star shape, there are many designs that would be easier on the eyes than the one we use now. it didn't start out so bad as it is now. it's just gotten worse every time states have been added to the union. maybe the US will make states of some of its territories some day and we'll have an opportunity to make the design a little better.
who says other countries don't profit from america's overdeveloped sense of nationalism? this weekend when we were at the grocery store, my wife noticed that the american flags they had for sale were all made in china. i just think it's funny, but i suppose there are people who would be outraged to discover this information.
saw they might be giants on friday. they put on a good show (as always). i'm really looking forward to the new album coming out in less than a week. the concert was outdoors. it was cool because we could see columbus' big fireworks display after the concert from the venue. the uncool part was that the venue's PA played the music from WNCI 97.9 that was supposed to go along with the show. i don't understand why some people think it isn't a celebration until you actually play "celebrate" by kool and the gang and "y'all ready for this?" by 2unlimited. i can party without those songs. oh, and even though "fortunate son" contains the phrase, "wave the flag, ooh the red, white, and blue," CCR did not write it as a song of patriotism. of course, you'd know this if you ever listened to the song.

Though actually there are some historical American flags that I think are even attractive. Like the so-called Betsy Ross flag [fotw.net], for example.
I also would actually favor going back to six-pointed stars, [fotw.net] but then again the ZOG conspiracy theorists would have a field day. Maybe eight-pointed stars would be better.
Great Star flags [fotw.net] play around a bit with the star arrangement -- maybe that would help some. But that still doesn't help the stripes.
This one [fotw.net] is strangely appealing, if unusual historically.
Or if we wanted to go medieval [fotw.net] and resurrect the Bedford flag... ;-)
And if you wanted to really piss off the anti-French types these days [fotw.net]...
