I worked for the clinical trial business for quite a while in my career. I don't take anything with less than a decade of safety data for any reason, no matter what the FDA, CDC or anyone else says. History and my experience in the pharmaceutical and medical sciences business has made me a skeptic of any claims that are not backed up by years of factual data. Dr. Zelenko's in NYC has now treated over 1000 patients with Hydroxychloroquine+Azithromycin+zinc and has had great success with this medication combination and protocol. But as you point out it appears that the medication provides effective prophylaxis to a point in the progresssion of the disease (advanced virual pneumonia). I haven't heard of any cases at this point (though I don't have inside clinical information) where late stage intubated patients were getting positive results from these meds. The WHO already had some known problems with their CoVID-19 tests and based on reporting from Politifact in a conversation with Dr. Fauci stated that no test kits were ever offered to the US / CDC. Furthermore the CDC has confirmed the protocol for disease testing in the case of US epidemic or pandemic currently preclude using test kits provided from external sources. Anyone can argue the wisdom or lack thereof in that protocol decision, but the CDC debates such things when making such serious decisions and it is their call on how best to protect the US population. Add to that the US internal manufacting/verification problems that transpired on domestically produced test kits and you wind up with the delay that we have experienced in ramping up volume of testing. From my perspective neither political party gets any significant bonus points from the testing timeline, but I do think the early travel ban from China and EU help Trump to some extent, mainly because his detractors were foolish enough to attack him as racist and Xenophobic only to have the virus outbreak ensue a few weeks later.
