Comment Give them the right tool (Score 2) 66

Give them the computer they are already the most productive on, be it Windows, Mac OSX, Linux.
The most expensive thing for most situations is the idiot at the keyboard.

Where the required use case means there is only one option, not matter what OS, then that person will need to "up skill"

Computers are like golf clubs, you are either left handed or right handed and a few ambidextrous.
Right handed clubs are cheaper because more people use them, but trying to force left handed people to use them "because" is clearly stupid.

having some one 12 minutes more productive a day (number chose to make the maths easier), makes them 1 hour more productive a week.
So over a year that makes them say 50 hours more productive.
at a cost of $50-$100 per hour per staff members (wages, holidays, room costs, etc etc etc etc) that is $2500-$5000 a year, ie the computer effectively gets paid off in one year or less.

There are cross platform applications for most run of the mill situations, particularly between OSX/Windows, but with WINE or other environment Linux is an equal partner.
I have access to a VDI solution for a particular App I need to use, and that is there for security as much as anything. And it is just an App, I am not working with it daily nor am I using any of the underlying OS for anything.
right tool for the right jon.

If your "idea" is that what you use is easier (from YOUR perspective) how about you try and switch to see how less productive you become

I am a Mac user, say what you like about it, it works best for me.
What ever your choice/needs are, more power to you, that however does not impact me at all

I have seen the flame wars since my TRS-80 days, it got boring very quickly back then and it has not improved at all today, so leave it alone.

I am NOT an Apple hater, and they regularly piss me off, but their gear works for me.
I do not care what you use, if it works for you, you made the right choice.

If I can but buy it outright then I do not buy it.
I still run my 27" iMac with all the software I bought with zero extra costs
I do not install "in App purchases" Apps because of hidden costs, I have no idea what costs are involved, so no, not touching them.
my iPhone 11 will get replaced when it actually dies, not when Apple decides it needs more money from me

I can buy my computers over 3 years, often on interest free terms, so Apple is just running a very bad economic choice here as I end up with hardware I can sell or pass on to Grandkids when they need one for school.

EXCEPT for some businesses who have 3-4 year turnover for hardware "because" then this will work for them as lease costs are 100% tax deductible where as purchases are on a depreciation schedule.

But either way I am not going to scream like a hysterical school girl. I have seen the "flame wars" since my first computer a TRS-80 M1 clone. Boring then, pathetic now.
