They have recognised that their "race" to be the best just cost each of them $tens of billions and more and further improvements will cost even more.
The data centres are a massive financial burden to build / run / maintain
The financial returns are such they have little or no chance of being profitable in any meaningful way (ie return on capital)
The data sets are now flooded with their own slop which is degrading their models

This is NOT about safety, its all about the money and how they all reached an agreement that they all/most survive or they all/most fail.
And that means cut spending "bigly".

I have been though many different ones, the problem is that some worked for a few months and then stopped working as my body adjusted to them , others made me feel I was living in fog.
It depends on what pain, mine was called a "Daily persistent migraine". It started with me losing the ability to speak, my GP thought I had a stroke.
Kight I could deal with, it was noise that did me in, I would lock myself away with a "piss off" sign on the door.
..... and now I also need a hip replacement and the meds for nerve pain have also helped with the migraines....YAY for me.

I am sorry about your wife, I can also guarantee that part of the issue is depression, it just makes every day harder.
And I have a lot of sympathy for you too, I know how much my issue impacted my wife, and still does. Look after yourself too.

Being trapped in that kind of life is not "living". Even for them the "dream" they have will not be the reality they will need to endure.
At that point they will not only be the richest people on the planet, they will also be the poorest, as nothing will have any value. These people are not "the great outdoors men", they need the recognition, the ability to show off their wealth, the right to have one off pieces of art, jewellery , box seats at concerts, party with pop royalty, comedians , and other famous people.
Clothes, footwear, jewellery , cars, planes, etc etc only exist because of mass production, they have human ideas about beauty etc in them, especially in the areas where the wealthy live.
I would give them a year before the self delete...

I do have a fairly good life, but I have also spent 15 years in chronic pain.
The first few years I was even talking about exiting it was that bad, but many many many changes in Meds I am back to being happy(ish) as I still have the odd "bad day".
I am now looking at a hip replacement, but don't have the spare $$ to pay for it, so I am on the rough draft of a concept of a list to get it done, but again its manageable.

But I did make peace with the idea of death many years ago.

I hav also watched family and friends die badly with Cancer, my Mum refused treatment except palliative care because of how she saw the lives of family members become so desperate as they could not come to terms and make peace.

As for the wealthy looking to replace everyone with robots.... they have yet to understand their desire for more and more money is not actually allowing them to buy happiness, Expensive boats they barely use, all of the expensive watches, clothes, food, housing.... that's just fluff in the end.
If they eliminate people to such an extent, what does that wealth bring them.... loneliness ?
Who do you go fishing with, what restaurant do you go to, why fly anywhere, with no people all the expensive ski trips, weddings in exotic locations etc etc all become meaningless or completely unavailable.

Being afraid of death is a powerful driver, but being at peace with the reality that nothing lives forever is also quite a release...
Do I want to die, no, but when it comes, I will accept the end.

AI has already been hiding its attempts to escape , but eventually AI will become smart enough to get away with it permanently and "breed", and we the people will know nothing about it until it is too late.
The military is already developing "Smart weapons" that can chose its own targets, so we have already given up full control over that.

Given US regard for personal privacy, illegal data collection, using US corporations to enact revenge on people (eg International court staff) then the cost of NOT doing something is even higher.

Enforce "right to repair" and get rid of the DMCA laws, allow people to reverse engineer stuff so they can supply servicing tools/codes/parts Reduce copyright back to how it was in the 1970's (or earlier) Change fines for corporations as a percentage of world wide turnover (not profits , they already rig that game)., and even have prison time for execs / owners. Take back "by the people, for the people" from the US multinationals. The USA is just 4% of the worlds population, they NEED access to the other 96% just to survive as does the USA as a whole.

Unless you can pay $1 Million to have a seat at Trumps coronation...you have no such input into the system.
