Journal sillypixie's Journal: Aaaaaaaarrrrrgh!!!!!! 7

#1 Suckiest thing to see when logging into your hosted web server (after being kicked off in the middle of the day by an instant reboot with no grace period or warning message):

[monster]$ uptime
  15:10:09 up 8 min, 2 users, load average: 47.69, 23.53, 9.43

Ok I lied, things can get suckier:

[monster]$ uptime
  15:35:35 up 33 min, 2 users, load average: 92.60, 64.12, 44.13

Somehow, I don't think the reboot solved the problem. What a surprise. Hope they think up something else to try soon... I so hate not having root access.

  • Now that's what I call a load.

Ya, this is why I much prefer having my very own server. ;-)

    Cheers,

    • I still shudder at the thought of the Dread Server Mines (of DOOM) we'll all be slaving away in once you take power in '08;-)
  • You aren't going to post the output of uname -a, ps -ef, and perhaps a minute or so of vmstat 5 so we can see exactly what is going on?

    No fair.

It's like being told there is pr0n on the TV, but having 99% of the screen covered up by paper.
    • I'm totally hamstrung on the troubleshooting side of things, I have no access to anything except processes I own. Which is really sad, because 2.5 hours later and after 2 emails to support, the problem has not been solved. I don't have a lot of confidence either because the machines around here bounce waaay too regularly, which intimates to me that these people might be using reboot as the idiot's version of kill...

But here's what I can tell ya:

      [monster]$ uname -a
      Linux monster 2.4.32-grsec+f6b+gr217+nfs+a3
      • Yeah, can't tell much from that other than the problem isn't you :)

It looks like they have one of the Linux kernel partitioning systems akin to Solaris Zones set up to divvy things up. Nothing much to see here because of it.

It's not terribly taxed on resources visible to you, so it seems to me that something has spun off way more threads or process than it should have.
  • I bought a bunch of business-card size CD-R's for handouts.

Wouldn't you know that my trusty Linux system is refusing to burn anything onto them?

I'm hoping the laptop will do the trick - going to leave this until morning.
  • Your post is just one more incident I've heard of in the past few months. I'm becoming convinced that fairly cheap shared hosting services may not be the right thing to use. My trusty AMD K6-2 400 Mhz box hooked to a wimpy DSL line worked just fine for many years, or at least it was my problem when it didn't. Random debugging, rebugging by other users, messing with the system by sysadmins is disconcerting. I recently signed up for a shared hosting service, but haven't moved my sites yet. I need to decide b
