shrugger writes: I picked up my Blackberry this morning to do a search and noticed, Bing as my default search engine. I thought this was very strange, since I didn't pick this setting. I went to change it back to Google, and to my chagrin, Bing was my only option!! Apparently Verizon has pushed updates that remove all search providers except Bing. Thanks a lot Verizon!

Submission + - Android's Success a Threat to Free Software? (linuxjournal.com)

Glyn Moody writes: Two years after its launch, Google's Linux-based Android platform is finally making its presence felt in the world of smartphones. Around 20,000 apps have been written for it: although well behind the iPhone's tally, that's significantly more than just a few months ago. But there's a problem: few of these Android apps are free software. Instead, we seem to be witnessing the birth of a new hybrid stack: open source underneath, and proprietary on top. If, as many believe, mobile phones will become the main computing platform for most of the world, that could be a big problem for the health of the free software ecosystem. So what, if anything, should the community be doing about it?

User Journal

Journal Journal: My opinion of Microsoft is improving.

For many years I've hated Microsoft, in a way that compared them to Satan him (possibly her) self. I was a Novell admin, I loved Netscape and suggested people use it, and I was generally in the Windows as an OS, get everything else from somewhere else crowd. Remember, Linux was still somewhat in its infancy back then, and Mac was pre OS X so it sucked. OS 2 was out there, but largely ignored at the time.

I thought the exact same thing myself. I can see everything including attitudes with new prejudices developing just like in the movie. What if your family has the genetic marker for a physical or mental disease of somekind? Soon I forsee a kind of national registry like the credit bureau for "bad" and "good" genetics. Why waste your time by taking a chance when you can have a sure shot on whatever you need to hire someone for or want to give a 30 year mortgage or sell insurance? We're possibly approaching a very dark time in human history. Think about the almighty social security administration and that serial number they give you. SS was born of a want to help people, now it's used by businesses and crooks to hurt and/or ruin a person. It may seem like I'm coming from a dark view of the world, but honestly I am an optimist. I have unwavering faith in human nature...
