Submission + - The Cartesian Crisis: The inability to know what is real

sd1000 writes: The Cartesian Crisis is a state of civilization where individuals are unable to discern the certainty of any information, resulting in a world devoid of verifiable truth or reality. This crisis stems from a multifaceted instrumental cause, comprising failures of institutions of knowledge that have been compromised by propaganda and ideology, but most importantly, significantly empowered to do so with the aid of ever more powerful generative AI.

The scale of manipulated and generated information, and the ease and quality of its creation, is leading to an escalation of AI wars. There are now tools that can automatically generate resumes and apply to thousands of jobs per day. In response, recruiters are now turning to AI to have AI-powered recruiters perform the interviews, instead of people, to sort through the volume of AI-generated applicants.

Submission + - Boeing-made satellite explodes in space (cbsnews.com)

quonset writes: Boeing has had a series of issues over the past few years. From planes crashing, lost service records, to a recent strike which cost them $6 billion, now comes word a satellite they made has exploded in space.

The Intelsat 33e satellite, which was launched in 2016 and provides communications across Europe, Asia and Africa, experienced "an anomaly" on Saturday, Intelsat said in a news release. Attempts were made to work with Boeing and repair the satellite, but on Monday, the U.S. Space Force confirmed that the satellite had exploded.

The satellite's breakup left some customers without power or communications services. Intelsat said it is working with third-party providers to limit service interruptions, and is in communication with customers.

Since the breakup, the U.S. Space Force is now tracking "around 20 associated pieces" of the satellite in space. The agency said that there are "no immediate threats" and routine assessments to ensure safety are ongoing.

Submission + - The Pentagon Wants to Use AI to Create Deepfake Internet Users (theintercept.com)

schwit1 writes: The Department of Defense wants technology so it can fabricate online personas that are indistinguishable from real people.

The United States’ secretive Special Operations Command is looking for companies to help create deepfake internet users so convincing that neither humans nor computers will be able to detect they are fake, according to a procurement document reviewed by The Intercept.

The plan, mentioned in a new 76-page wish list by the Department of Defense’s Joint Special Operations Command, or JSOC, outlines advanced technologies desired for country’s most elite, clandestine military efforts. “Special Operations Forces (SOF) are interested in technologies that can generate convincing online personas for use on social media platforms, social networking sites, and other online content,” the entry reads.

Radioactive Boar On the Rise In Germany 165

Germans who go out in the woods today are sure of a big surprise, radioactive boars. A portion of the wild boar population in Germany was irradiated after the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, and the boars are thriving. In the last two years government payments to compensate hunters for radioactive boar have quadrupled. From the article: "According to the Environment Ministry in Berlin, almost €425,000 ($555,000) was paid out to hunters in 2009 in compensation for wild boar meat that was too contaminated by radiation to be sold for consumption. That total is more than four times higher than compensation payments made in 2007." I think the Germans are overlooking just how much money there is to be made from regenerating bacon.

Did you read the article? Do you understand the ramification of "horizontal transfer of transgenes to other organisms"? Eating GM food once could permanently damage you for life. Your own intestinal bacteria could be modified to produce pesticides or other adverse functions. Due to the large adoption of GM foods, I stand by the statement they are likely to be the most dangerous foods based on the number of people affected and that you can not recover or reverse the affects. The occurrence of improperly stored foods having adverse impacts would be insignificant in comparison if the concerns of some researches over GM dangers are verified. My observation is simply stating what some researches are calling into question. This presentation provides even more detailed analysis on the subject of GMO foods http://vimeo.com/6575475

GM foods are likely the most dangerous foods available. Breeding does not have the same effect as GM foods. The process of creating a GM food results in mutations in the DNA. Some of the issues: " * The novel proteins created by accident in transgenic foods and their occasional documented effects on human health (allergies, toxicity), which we can't monitor properly due to the lack of labeling of GMO foods. * The horizontal transfer of transgenes to other organisms, such as the bacteria in mammals' stomachs, which we were assured couldn't happen. (Might this be behind the rise in Crohn's disease? We'll never know, because as Lotter documents, GMO foods have barely been tested in their food state on mammals, and not over any long-term.) * Ecological side effects, such as the development of herbicide-resistant weeds and growing pest resistance to the plant-impregnated insecticide Bacillus thurengiensis, along with Bt crops' negative effects on soil organisms such as earthworms and on aquatic ecosystems." http://www.ethicurean.com/2009/06/03/lotter-gmopaper/

TSA Worker Jailed In Body Scan Rage Incident 352

A TSA worker in Miami was arrested for aggravated battery after he attacked a co-worker for making fun of the size of his genitals. Rolando Negrin walked through one of the new body scanners during a recent training session and a supervisor started making fun of his manhood. From the article: "According to the police report, Negrin confronted one of his co-workers in an employee parking lot, where he hit him with a police baton on the arm and back."

Yes, there may be individual studies that are unconvincing. However, the reference I referred to above is extremely detailed on the science of the risks. Basically, I've always assumed that GM science is very precise. But is not like programming. Inserting genes is actually quite imprecise. You can't guarantee the location of the gene as well as the insertion process creates mutations. This seems to be the root of the problems.

US Grants Home Schooling German Family Political Asylum 1324

A US judge has granted political asylum to a family who said they fled Germany to avoid persecution for home schooling their children. Uwe Romeike and his wife, Hannelore, moved to Tennessee after German authorities fined them for keeping their children out of school and sent police to escort them to classes. Mike Connelly, attorney for the Home School Legal Defence Association, argued the case. He says, "Home schoolers in Germany are a particular social group, which is one of the protected grounds under the asylum law. This judge looked at the evidence, he heard their testimony, and he felt that the way Germany is treating home schoolers is wrong. The rights being violated here are basic human rights."

M.U.L.E. Is Back 110

jmp_nyc writes "The developers at Turborilla have remade the 1983 classic game M.U.L.E. The game is free, and has slightly updated graphics, but more or less the same gameplay as the original version. As with the original game, up to four players can play against each other (or fewer than four with AI players taking the other spots). Unlike the original version, the four players can play against each other online. For those of you not familiar with M.U.L.E., it was one of the earliest economic simulation games, revolving around the colonization of the fictitious planet Irata (Atari spelled backwards). I have fond memories of spending what seemed like days at a time playing the game, as it's quite addictive, with the gameplay seeming simpler than it turns out to be. I'm sure I'm not the only Slashdotter who had a nasty M.U.L.E. addiction back in the day and would like a dose of nostalgia every now and then."
