Comment Kill A Watt to the rescue! (Score 1) 3

Nice to see some actual numbers behind all the speculation! As the great Adam Savage once put it - "the only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down." While yeah, $2 a month isn't that big of a deal, if the exchange really comes out to 7MBs thats a huge improvement for us average joes.

Submission + - Slashdot killed my Kickstarter campaign

agizis writes: Alex from Connectify here. I wanted to say thanks to all of you who commented on the Slashdot story about our Kickstarter campaign It was super-educational discussing Switchboard with all of you: you wanted your own servers, and we weren’t doing enough to communicate what was so special about Switchboard. Based in a large part on your feedback, we blew up our Kickstarter campaign, and changed almost everything. Thanks, Slashdot. This isn’t reddit, but ask me anything.

Submission + - Apple Releases Basic iPod Touch, Possibly Foreshadowing iPhone Strategy (ibtimes.com)

redletterdave writes: While the new 16 GB iPod Touch released Thursday features the same 4-inch Retina display and dual-core A5 processor as its other variants, the newest, cheapest iPod Touch lacks a rear camera and comes in just two colors â" black and silver. Apple is reportedly pursuing a similar strategy with the iPhone, as reports from the past several months have pointed to development of a "low-cost iPhone" with basic features to be sold at a lower price point.

Submission + - Crowdsourced Networking Planning (wheredoyouwantfasterinternet.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Tom’s Hardware reports on the Connectify Switchboard software that “divides the user's traffic between Wi-Fi, 3G/4G and Ethernet-based connections on a packet-by-packet basis. Even a single stream — such as a Netflix movie — can be split between two or three Internet connections for a higher resolution and faster buffering.“ As part of its Kickstarter campaign, Connectify is geolocating their backers to optimize deployment of their servers. This is a clever way for supporters to influence the project beyond pledge levels and stretch goals, and it’s actually kind of fun to watch.

Submission + - Making Wireless Carriers Play Together 1

An anonymous reader writes: Ok, so the idea of opening all Wi-Fi networks in a misthought utopian vision didn’t go over so well. But no one discussed the best part of open Wi-Fi networks: bonding different Wi-Fi and mobile carriers to get the best price and decent performance. We could save money and avoid lock in by bouncing to whoever gives us the best rate, and, when we need speed, jump on all of them at once for a network bonded boost.
