Google Shares Insights On Accelerating Web Sites 230

miller60 writes "The average web page takes 4.9 seconds to load and includes 320 KB of content, according to Google executive Urs Holzle. In his keynote at the O'Reilly Velocity conference on web performance, Holzle said that competition from Chrome has made Internet Explorer and Firefox faster. He also cited the potential for refinements to TCP, DNS, and SSL/TLS to make the web a much faster place, and cited compressing headers as a powerful performance booster. Holzle also noted that Google's ranking algorithm now includes a penalty for sites that load too slowly."

Actually, what the home office spokesman said sounds pretty sensible. The electronic part doesn't have to be more secure than the paper part.
As I understand it, the chip currently contains no more information than what is printed. If you can physically read the passport by looking at it (or taking a picture or whatever), then you have all the information needed to clone the passport without looking at the RFID chip. If you haven't seen the paper part of the passport, then you don't have the key and can't read the RFID part (unless you can crack the encryption without knowing the key). I don't see the problem here.

Of course, if the RFID chip has more information on it than what is displayed on the paper part (fingerprints for example), then there is a problem. As somebody else commented however, when that starts happening, they're going to mandate authentication of the person/machine querying the information using public key cryptography.

Microsoft Claims Worlds Best Search Engine Soon 536

kw writes "Microsoft will introduce a search engine better than Google in six months in the United States and Britain followed by Europe, its European president said on Wednesday. "What we're saying is that in six months' time we'll be more relevant in the U.S. market place than Google," said Neil Holloway, Microsoft president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. That timing would presumably coincide more or less with the launch of Vista."

Journal Journal: Journals, (we)blogs, random ramblings

I thought I'd start making use of my Slashdot journal. No particular reason, I just felt like writing a journal entry. I went so far as thinking of registering with LiveJournal, or starting one of those "blog" thingies on my own rather boring website, but then I saw the journal section of my profile in Slashdot and thought "Hey, I can use this, and I don't even have to fart about setting it up."

Journal Journal: repatriation

discovered yesterday that I am pretty much fucked in my quest for dual citizenship. You CAN apply for citizenship after living in england for 5 years BUT the last year has to have been free of any time constraint. A work permit is a time constraint! So that last year has to be lived in "indefinite leave to remain" status. To get that status you have to be a rich business man basically. And be able to prove you have invested 200k to your english business in the 4 year period or something. bullshi

Journal Journal: another week

Another good week. No caffiene at work. A soya late at the basement on saturday. Ordered portein, carb and creatine supplements for my new work out plan which will commence soon as I get them. But I am working out in the mean time and eating more than ever. Definately want to be 250 by next year, with muscle mass and low fat levels. Had good band practices. Ordered stuff to start building my electric drum kit going to be working on a midi->drum machine GBA program. Should be interesting. This

Journal Journal: decent week

didn't have any caffeine at work, had more energy than when I am having a "cuppa" per day. I am gonna limit myself to one coffee on the weekend (Saturday) as a sort of ritual, go to town have a cup of coffee and then meet zoe at work.

Got my weight bench ordered, bought a GBA SP, looking at mp3 player I can use for recording my band at practice. Getting a lot of documentation work done on projectx.

Journal Journal: progress

none. listening to rainer maria and texas is the reason today. coming down from a few weeks of caffiene overdrive. not even drinking green tea. I can't believe I used to do real drugs if coming down from caffiend now affects me like this! I really want to do a more "indie" style band in the vein of TITR or even more straight up brit pop like idlewild etc. I want to get an electronic drum kist setup for practice and recording. I bought a planner so I can get organized, lets see if I can actually
