Submission + - Open Source Solution Breaks World Sorting Records

allenw writes: In a recent blog post, Yahoo!'s grid computing team announced that Apache Hadoop was used to break the current world records in the annual GraySort contest in the Gray and Minute sorts in the general purpose (Daytona) category. Apache Hadoop is the only open source software to ever win the competition. Apache Hadoop also won the Terasort competition last year.

Submission + - Illusion Cloak Makes One Object Look Like Another (technologyreview.com)

KentuckyFC writes: "Metamaterials are synthetic substances that can steer light in any way imaginable. Their most famous incarnation is in invisibility cloaks which work by steering light around a region of space making any object inside that region invisible. But invisibility is just the start. A team of physicists in Hong Kong (the same guys who recently worked out how to cloak objects at a distance) have worked out how create a cloak that makes one object look like another. Instead of steering light to make a region of space look empty, the illusion cloak manipulates light in a way that makes a region of space look as if it contains a specific object, such as an elephant. So any object within that region of space, a mouse say, takes on the appearance of an elephant."

Submission + - Basic Linux boot on open graphics card

David Vuorio writes: "The Open Graphics Project aims to develop a fully open-source graphics card; all specs, designs, and source code are released under Free licenses. Right now, FPGAs (large-scale reprogrammable chips) are used to build a development platform called OGD1. They've just completed an alpha version of legacy VGA emulation, apparently not an easy feat. This YouTube clip shows Gentoo booting up in text mode, with OGD1 acting as the primary display. The Linux Fund is receiving donations, so that ten OGD1 boards can be bought (at cost) for developers. Also, the FSF shows their interest by asking volunteers to help with the OGP wiki."

Submission + - Btrfs Is Not Yet The Performance King (phoronix.com)

Ashmash writes: Benchmarks of the Btrfs filesystem have been published by Phoronix that compare it to the XFS, EXT3, and EXT4 file-systems. In the end they conclude that this next-generation Linux filesystem is not yet the performance king. In a great number of the tests, the EXT4 filesystem that was designed to be an interim step to Btrfs actually performs much better than the unstable Btrfs, albeit Btrfs still has more advanced features. Fedora 11 even took longer to boot when using Btrfs than EXT3 or EXT4.

Submission + - SPAM: 'Miraculous' stem cell progress reported in China! 1

destinyland writes: "In China's Guangdong Province there's been "almost miraculous" progress in actually using stem cells to treat diseases such as blindness, cerebral palsy, autism, Lou Gehrig's disease, and spinal cord injuries. One Chinese biotech company is now building a 21,500 square foot stem cell storage facility and hiring professors from American universities like Stanford . Two California familes even flew their children to China for a cerebral palsy treatment that isn't available in the U.S., and the founder of Beike is so enthusiastic, he says his company is exploring the concept of using stem cells to extend longevity beyond 120 years."
