idk what the chances of changing their policy is, but something like "category 2 should default to off because ..."

It's an AC coupled system so solar goes DC -> AC and then the battery is AC -> DC -> AC which is where this percentage is coming from.

There's a YT guy who just posted his 2 year breakdown on his Massachusetts green house (electric everything, heat pumps, solar + batteries) a few days ago.
There it seems the utility makes heavier usage of his batteries than yours, but decreasing.

channel: "undecided with Matt Farrell". vid title "The Hidden Problem With Home Batteries" is a bit click baity, in that he's quite bullish on the whole thing, basically he's saying he just roundtrip loses 20% of the electricity in his battery, whereas, in MA with the current laws , he can use the grid as "storage" with 0% loss because he has net metering INCLUDING transmission costs.
i.e. if he puts in 1 kwh and takes out 1.5kwh he only pays for 0.5 kwh so he "stored" that 1kwh for free

In his case, even with all the up front tax rebates and with payments from the utility for the peak load shifting the batteries are costing him ~$207 / month over 20 years iirc. (including the installation cost )

Like they mention battery capacity added over 5 years... and better grid interconnects with other regions. But don't show what role specifically either of these played in peak usage scenarios.

they can easily require the LCD display on the charger to list the prices and have them updated via software. like the system already knows the price since it is charging you a total, it's not just dispensing unmetered energy.

well, you try architect, and pre-stage, and segregate and all those things to give yourself as many is as possible and as few critical sections and points of no return as possible.

It's not always possible (or just too expensive ) to cover everything, and there's also that thing nobody thought about... but still this one sounds pretty bad. Reading between the lines I'm guessing this want some bigger things, but that they didn't realize that it was happening at first. otherwise, if it's just sw update (vs involving like multiple pieces of core infrastructure) you'd think they could just take the whole center offline and let other places deal with the calls while they fixed this one....

oh, but NYC has 311. I haven't used theirs but in the 2 places I have used it... they were more responsive and intellectual curious and engaged than the police/911 ones... at least usually.

my experience over the years calling the police non-emergency number (which also routes to 911 operators in my area) or 911 for urgent but not critical things in a few towns has had the operators be at best "curt, but professional". rarely had one who seemed to care about what was going on or that wanted to help or dispensed actually useful routing advice.
