Nuclear power done cheaply with limited oversight is incredibly dangerous. Yes nuclear power plants can be done very safely and very great expense. So much so that you would never build a nuclear power plant in 2026 unless you had major space constraints and couldn't build a wind or solar farm for some reason. That's basically Japan and nobody else. Maybe a few places in France. But even then that's highly debatable.

This means that if you're firing up a new nuclear power plant in 2026 and you're not doing it for research or military purposes that you are probably looking to do it with the lowest bidder and the least maintenance. You better hope you're not living next to that.

And then every few years Facebook either buys that site out or runs them out of business by underpricing advertising in that space until there's no revenue for that company and they run out of investor cash. It's gotten to the point where nobody's really challenging Facebook anymore for anything except hoping for a buyout.

Facebook does this because those kids are going to grow up and keep using the site they are used to and Facebook needs to make sure they own that and filter those users back into their main ecosystem whether those users like it or not.

They of course couldn't do this with tick tock so they just have the government step in since it's a Chinese company. Incidentally it was only because it was a Chinese company backed by the Chinese government that they couldn't do that.

If you start voting for politicians who enforce antitrust law then Facebook goes away in about 10 or 15 years.

In addition to profit people want power. And a 24/7 surveillance state owned and operated by billionaires will give those billionaires power. The power they get from that is well worth the expense. Especially because at the end of the day all their money is stolen from you and me so it's not like they're spending their own hard-earned cash. You can do fuck all about the outsourcing no matter how many tariffs you levy on your citizens. You can't compete with somebody who makes 1/10 what you do and doesn't have clean drinking water and electricity year-round.

The automation push is where we need to be paying attention. Donald Trump's own commerce Secretary admitted that even if factories come back the jobs won't because the factories will be full of robots. And yes ai and its cousin machine learning have been automating tons of shit.

There is a paradigm shift that I don't think anyone accounts for, which is the idea that billionaires going on trillionaires would be willing to spend more money on automation then it costs to hire humans because of the power it gives them to be able to do Mass layoffs.

Think of it this way, you get to the point where you can automate 20% of your workforce but it costs you more money to do so. However when you fire 20% of your workforce thanks to automation you've created a huge supply of desperate labor and you can pay the remaining employees much much less. The end result is you come out ahead.

CEOs, captains of industry and billionaires are absolutely paying attention to and manipulating the overall labor market and your overall bargaining power in that market. This is not something we as employees like to think about because it's like thinking about cosmic horror. What the actual fuck do you do about it?

This means they are happy to lose money on a deal if it gets them more power because they have so much money that they have all the power they are going to get from the money and now they have to seek out other sources of power.

This is a really hard concept I think for people who work for a living to wrap their heads around. It's why AI can lose money hand over fist and the billionaires don't care. Automating all our jobs away gives them more power even if it costs more money than employing us.

You need to stop thinking about money in terms of buying nice sports cars and mansions and yachts and start thinking it in terms of deciding how human civilization is organized and elevating a handful of people to near godhood.

Comment I see your mistake (Score 2, Insightful) 95

Same mistake the other guy made. You're assuming you can dismantle government and the billionaires will not keep a large federal and state government for their own purposes.

You're thinking that the billionaires will just let you live your life happily. They will not. They are not content to be billionaires they want to be trillionaires and then God Kings. To do this they need to impoverish basically everyone. And once they have done that they need a large powerful government to create the weapons and drones that are going to be used to periodically kill you and your family in Mass so that you don't build weapons and drones to kill them.

You need to be thinking about government like a nuclear bomb. Once we discovered it we were stuck with it. You are always going to have people telling you what to do, the question is will you have a say in that or not.

Now there is one scenario where billionaires do not need government anymore. That's the techno feudal hellscape. In that situation there is a government to speak of but it's managed by a very small number of people because everyone else is living in abject horrifying poverty like you would imagine on the worst of the American Indian reservations. Then the billionaires have a handful of engineers to keep everything running, a handful of thugs to keep the engineers in line and a handful of sex slaves and torture dolls to play with. That's the future that the billionaires saying all this up have in store for you.

You are not one of the engineers you wouldn't be posting on this website if you are you would be busy making robots and AI for the billionaires. You are not one of the thugs because you couldn't have written that comment if you are.

You are not one of the billionaires because again, you wouldn't be posting on this forum if you were.

That leaves sex slave, torture doll or abject poverty as your choices in that future. And you don't get to decide which of those three. They do. Because they get to tell you what to do because you gave up all your power to billionaires in a desperate bid to destroy government.

Comment You're making excuses (Score 1, Interesting) 95

I don't know why but you feel the need to defend billionaires. Trust me they don't need you to defend them.

Look up the phrase template law. A template law is when rich people write a template for passing laws across multiple states and jurisdictions.

All of this surveillance bullshit is coming from template laws and other lobbying from extremely wealthy people. This is a fact. You have Google you can look it up and verify it for yourself. You will have to actually dig up some actual journalism to do that because billionaires have bought 90% of the media so it will take a little bit of effort on your part. It trust me it's worth it.

The bigger issue here is that here you are ripping into the government instead of the extremely wealthy and powerful people manipulating the government.

This stems from a mistaken belief that you can dismantle the government. You can't.

If you do not create a government somebody else will. They're just too useful. They are like nuclear bombs once we develop to them as a species we were stuck with them. If you try to avoid engaging in government all that happens is billionaires enter the vacuum of power you left and they get to make the rules and tell you what to do.

If you don't like being told what to do, which is probably your problem, well tough. Sometimes people are going to tell you what to do. For example they're going to tell you you can't drive drunk or that you have to wear a seatbelt or that your kids need to have an education instead of being feral in your backyard. That's a side effect of human beings being a social species and you're not going to get away from it unless you well maybe unless you turn into a insectoid or lizard like alien.

So you're not going to ever get away from being told what to do the question is are you going to have a say in how and when you are told what to do. That's up for you to decide. But right now you are abdicating that responsibility in favor of billionaires. And you need to start asking why.

Comment It's not the government (Score 5, Interesting) 95

Noticed that all of this surveillance is being owned and operated by private companies. While you're crazy uncle is having a conniption fit about ethics in games journalism and trans girls in sports (or violent video games and satanic music if you're old) Peter thiel and Planitir have been lobbying local and state governments to create a corporate surveillance state.

This is what happens when you let a handful of people have too much power. Billionaires are not compatible with your freedom. But the only way to control and limit that power is to take their money away and redistribute and that thar be the socialisms.

Basically it feels unfair to take somebody's money away and it makes you think that the next step is that somebody's going to take your money away. Also people like the idea of there being somebody in charge and they like to imagine they can be a billionaire someday themselves and if we stop letting people do that all that imagination goes away.

None of that makes sense when you think about it but this isn't about making sense this is about vibes. And taking away billionaires money so that they cannot use it to control your life has a bad vibe and I don't know how to deal with that. It's easy to say billionaires bad but when it comes time to actually do the thing and take their money that falls apart fast. Just like how there were dirt poor monarchists back in the day. Hell a lot of people in the UK support the monarchy there and it's still extremely controversial to suggest shutting it down and taking their land and making it public.
