Submission + - Quebec bill would force Internet firms to block access to online gaming sites

rotoblobule writes: In order to help Loto-Québec fight against illegal gaming site, the Québec government is currently passing bill 74, which will impose mandatory banning by internet providers of a list of online gaming sites. Stories about this are provided in french and english. Here is the relevant excerpt from the bill itself: "To monitor online gambling, the Consumer Protection Act is amended to require Internet service providers to block access to illegal gambling sites entered on a list drawn up by the Société des loteries du Québec, which must report to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux if service providers fail to comply with the Act. The Régie will be responsible for informing service providers of their non-compliance, and the president and chief executive officer of the Société or a person the latter designates is granted investigation powers to ensure compliance."

This useless bashing on Quebec is sad and not what I expect on /. , although it is the norm in canadian english media (see http://www.thestar.com/article/611472 ).

I live in Quebec, in french. Years ago I tried to buy Zelda on GBA for my kids (10 at the time). The packaging was bilingual, but the game was english only! How nice is that? The european version of Zelda was in 5 languages, including french of course. We ended up playing in french on an GBA emulator...

Game distributors, for a tiny insignificant extra profit, are willing to force an entire nation where french is considered important to forget its culture. That's unacceptable. This deal only requires the distributor to be a little less lazy (and greedy) and put the french version, if one exists, on the shelves next to the english one. Is this "saying 'non' to english video games" ? hardly.

By the way, all this french and Quebec bashing is what will make Quebec leave Canada sooner or later. Think about this before you bash.
