Comment Xi is fibbing about not receiving assistance (Score 1) 320

Claim: Xi Jinping has stated that China has not received support or handouts from other countries over the past 70 years. Verdict: Not accurate. China has received various forms of foreign aid since 1949. Here's a breakdown: Foreign Assistance to China (Post-1949): Soviet Union (1950s): China received substantial economic and technical assistance. Included a $300 million loan. The USSR helped China build industrial infrastructure and develop defense capabilities. Japan (Starting in 1978): Provided soft loans after diplomatic normalization. Loans supported infrastructure, railways, ports, and environmental projects. World Bank and UN: The World Bank began lending to China in the early 1980s. Projects supported education, environmental protection, and economic reforms. The UN provided development aid annually, including over $100 million in early 2000s. United States: Provided aid focused on governance, legal reform, public health, and climate policy. In the 2000s, around $12 million annually went toward specific programs, including Tibetan community support.

Lookup how much money China have given to SMIC and other local fab ventures. Then look at how badly Intel fabs, and western fabs in general have done against asian fabs. Then look at what will happen when/if China invades Taiwan. The US would have no advanced semiconductors. All those trillion dollar companies that rely on asian fabs would go pffftt

Comment why do they always show this in Celsius? (Score 1) 119

I hate these +1.5 celsius posts. They should make it simpler for regular people to understand: 1) Most Americans don't know what celsius is. Why don't they show this in Farenheit? 2) Most people think 1.5 Celsius is fairly small. They don't get that the average earth temperature is 15 Celsius. A +1.5 increase is +10% It's almost purposefully vague so the regular population won't freak out about it.
