I hate my bank (B of A) and not in the "Your not invited to my parties" way. More like the "I'm going to hunt you down and kill you" way.

Among other things the most annoying thing about them is that I can never trust my account balance. The only thing it's good for is knowing what my balance might have been three days ago. When I use my Visa card it'll sometimes take up to a week before it shows up in my balance.

I called my bank from canada on sunday night to find out my balance. They said 450. After that I stayed two nights at a hotel both time the bill was less than 140 Canadian. 140 CND = 88 USD so my balance should now be about 250 - 200 with the other stuff (lunches, drinks, etc) I bought.

Fastforward to thursday. I'm having lunch with the guys from work. I don't have any cash on me so I get the check on my card and everyone else gives me cash. DECLINED! This is probably the most embarrassing thing ever. Getting declined on an 80 dollar charge? Ouch. :(

When I got home I figure I'll run by the bank ATM on the way to the meetup. I grabbed my check from last week(still hadn't cashed it) my camera (might as well), my (huge) cellphone my wallet and my iPOD(babe..er..chickmagnet). Now this is way to much stuff to carry in my pockets. So I figure I still want the camera and the iPOD too since it's a great way to start and end conversations. If your in a bad conversation just play a song you really like, put in one of the earplugs, bob your head to the beat. Works every time.

Well some where in the shuffle I lost my check. It wasn't in my pocket when I got to the ATM (no worries I didn't lose it. It was in the dining room on the floor.) I check my balance on the checking and it's now -200 how the hell did that happen? My checking has no money free so I'm stuck pulling money out of my savings.

Friday. I get my pay check. I go to deposit them both and notice after the first one that my balance becomes 100 and change. What now my balance was in the -400's? I remember hearing about how BofA will charge you a huge rate for carrying a negative balance. It's so bad that if it were a loan it would be loansharking, but since they call it a fee and not interest, they can f**k you with no lube.

Stuff I need/want to buy:
  • Car:
    • Hood hinges. Sort of necessary. Otherwise the only thing holding on my hood is it's own weight.
    • 4 barrel carb. All GTO's originally came with one but mine has a 2 barrel for some reason.
  • Computer
    • 60GB drive. I'm running low on space
    • Firewire kit. So I can hook up the new drive before I install it and copy every thing over.
    • OS X.2
    • QT6 Pro
  • Music
    • I want to buy this mixer it has two BPM counters.
    • New 20GB iPOD. Still not enough for ALL my mp3s but good enough to hold all the ones I actually like.
    • A few albums I've been meaning to get my grubby little hands on. DJ Shadow, DJ RAP, Freestylers. It's time for some more vinyl too

  • Dude! You have a GTO? What year? My dad has a '65 GTO convertible. It is all original, except it has a Hurst speed shifter. It even has a WORKING 8 track player. It's frackin' sweet. I've been trying to buy it from him, since he never drives it. He said I can have it when he's gone, but he jokes and says he won't put that in his will for fear I'll off him. :-)

Sucks about your bank... I use Quicken to keep tabs on my bank, but so far they haven't tried to screw me.

I have a '67. It's not very original. Was four speed now auto, stupid fucking sun roof, etc. Here are some pictures [mac.com] if you want to see As for your Dads car. Schweet! Nothing like a classic convertable. Are you sure the shifter is after market? All GTOs came standard with hurst shifters.
      • Actually, I had just assumed it was aftermarket. Now that you mention it, I believe dad said everything is original except for the paint. I think the carb WAS aftermarket, (I think it was a holley 4 barrel, and it got all gummed up when he put the car in storage.) but he found an original somewhere (or took the one off the parts car before selling it.)
  • Hey, my girl used to work at BofA, I asked her about this a while back. She said that the over draft protection stuff is actually pretty good, but in the end it charges you about as much as it does when you actually get over-drafted. She didn't recommend it. Anyhow, I hate banks. They take other people's money, give it to you, (loan) charge you interest on money that isn't there's, and then give it to other people too, repeating the cycle. Damn, maybe I need to open a bank....

    • The problems I have with over draft protection are simple.
      1. There is no way to set a limit like say 700 max. Short of setting up a second savings account and over drawing out of that. It would suck if someone got hold of my checks and forged one for 6000. Cleaning me out. Happened to a friend of mine.
      2. There is no warning that it happened. A little here a little there adds up. It would suck to look at you saving account and see it's missing a few grand.
  • I know they have Wells Fargos in CA, have you tried to get an account there? I bank there and haven't had many problems. The account balance is always up to date. Sure, they'll try to screw you over on fees like any large bank, but I haven't had any problems.
    • My friend has Wells Fargo and has the same problem. Do you use your visa(debit/check) card?

How it works (or doesn't ) is It updates your balance right away, and later it'll put the money back. Some thing about the bank needing to get the transaction sheet in 48 hours or something like that.
      • I regularly use the visa cash/check card. What I see happening is that your "available balance" is changed immediately after your purchase. The charge is actually deducted from your balance in 1 or 2 business days. I've made a purchase and then gone to an ATM 20 minutes later to find that my purchase was already reflected in the "available balance."

I don't know if the bank tells you your actual balance or your available balance when you call, but its website and ATM receipts will always reflect your purchases up to the minute. There can be a huge difference between the two, especially if you have made numerous purchases in the last few days.
