Ok, but their salaries are based on taxes that people need to vote for. Everyone always votes against increasing taxes for higher teacher salaries. The problem is that everyone is already taxed incredibly high at the federal level, and everybody always votes "no" to raise taxes at the local level where the direct benefits are seen the most. 33% of my income goes into taxes already, so yeah, I'm voting "no" every time.
I wouldn't exactly call them poverty wages either. I'm in Ohio and teachers make 60-70k a year after they get some experience in. It's not great but it's still a middle class income.
