You've commented multiple times about hempcrete in this story, while completely disregarding that (according to your own Wiki link) it is not fit for purpose, as it's not load-bearing. The majority of concrete in any build is in the slab, which is load-bearing by definition.

This is a ridiculous extrapolation; doing the same to health care costs means that health care and education will each be several hundred percent of our GDP in 18 years.

The cost of education is driven by the federal student loan program, the expansion of middle management, and the development of luxury dorms and gyms. I think it's transparent that such costs cannot continue to expand at the same rate for the next 18 years.

Caffeine May Counter Age-Related Inflammation, Says Study (stanford.edu) 99

According to a new Stanford study published in the journal Nature Medicine, caffeine may help to counter the inflammatory process that occurs in some older people. The researchers have found a connection between advancing age, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular disease and coffee consumption by analyzing blood samples, survey data and medical and family histories obtained from more than 100 human participants in a multiyear study. Stanford Medical Center Report adds: The study implicates this inflammatory process as a driver of cardiovascular disease and increased rates of mortality overall. Metabolites, or breakdown products, of nucleic acids -- the molecules that serve as building blocks for our genes -- circulating in the blood can trigger this inflammatory process, the study found. The study also provides evidence that caffeine and its own metabolites may counter the action of these circulating nucleic-acid metabolites, possibly explaining why coffee drinkers tend to live longer than abstainers. Notably, this inflammatory mechanism was found to be activated only in some, but not all, of the older study participants. Those in whom it was relatively quiescent tended to drink more caffeinated beverages. Laboratory experiments revealed that the mechanism was directly countered by caffeine and associated compounds. For the new study, the researchers compared blood drawn from older versus younger study participants to see which genes tended to be more highly activated in older people. They zeroed in on two clusters of genes whose activity was associated with the production of a potent circulating inflammatory protein called IL-1-beta. The genes within each cluster appeared to work in coordination with one another. The researchers found that incubating a type of immune cell with two of those nucleic-acid metabolites boosted activity in one of the gene clusters, resulting in increased IL-1-beta production. When injected into mice, the substances triggered massive systemic inflammation, along with high blood pressure. In addition, immune cells infiltrated and clogged the animals' kidneys, increasing renal pressure substantially. Intrigued by the correlation between older participants' health, gene-cluster activation and self-reported rates of caffeine consumption, the researchers followed up and verified that blood from the group with low cluster activity was enriched for caffeine and a number of its metabolites, compared with blood from the group with high cluster activity. (Examples of these metabolites are theophylline, also found in tea, and theobromine, which abounds in chocolate.) Incubating immune cells with caffeine and its breakdown products along with the inflammation-triggering nucleic acid metabolites substantially prevented the latter from exerting their powerful inflammatory effect on the cells.

CARB says: "The manufacturer of replacement electronic ignitions determines which of their models are considered replacements for original equipment. These replacement electronic ignitions are then listed by vehicle year, make, model and engine size in the manufacturer's catalogue. Electronic ignitions or electronic point replacement units for vehicles not originally equipped with these items require an Executive Order to be legal for street use. Swapping electronic ignitions from different years, engines, or makes is illegal."

And I stand corrected on flam test. But if we're honest, in aviation, $40 and $1000 is just a rounding error.

Here, I'll play.

Let's talk about tinting windows. In California, you can tint a car's back windows and rear window with whatever you want. Front passenger windows have to have at least 70% transparency. No approval necessary. What does it take to get an STC to put window tint on an aircraft?

Let's talk about engine systems. In California, you can replace an ignition system with another ignition with any system designated as valid by the manufacturer of that ignition system. Go look at the ElectroAir electronic ignition STC: you still need a magneto system, and that STC was probably quite expensive to get.

Let's talk about upholstery. In California, there appears to be no regulation on upholstery for car interiors. The FAA requires certain fire resistance, and the lab testing is apparently around $1000.

Let's talk about carriage for hire. In California, Uber and Lyft appear to operate without regulation. The FAA would nail you requiring an Air Carrier certificate (Part 135) if you did what they did in aviation.

You can't change the keys, so if you want to use SSHFS to backup systems that aren't agent supported, you've potentially given root access to anyone who's extracted the private key from the appliance (and leaked it to the internet). I wouldn't be surprised if the agents used the same craptastic cryptographic fail.

This. I own a Volt and an Equinox. I'd be at the dealer at the first possible moment that I could order a Voltec powered Equinox.

I've been seeing more glimpses of upcoming Volt marketing. I'm hoping the marketing team will push it exclusively as the Gen 2 release gets closer.

If I were GM's CEO, I'd make Voltec standard for all of their vehicles, cutting the pure ICE garbage right out of the market. Electric only as an option for every vehicle. The marketing team would have to do their jobs to pull it off, but when the people learn they can get near-Vette performance out of a Sonic...
