Submission + - Google Site Search Alarms Companies (nytimes.com)

presentt writes: "According to The New York Times, some large companies object to Google's more prominent placement of its site-search functionality by adding a "search-within-search" box underneath the query result for those companies, claiming it circumvents their advertising power and user intent. For example, Googling "New York Times" returns www.nytimes.com as the first result, with a "Search NYTimes.com" box immediately beneath it. Companies complain because results obtained from this box often appear next to AdWords advertisements for competitors, and the companies feel the user's original search intent was to browse directly to their site.

Proficient Google users will notice that the box is simply a version of Google's long-established "site:" operator."
