Submission + - Radiohead Made $6-$10 Million on Album (wired.com)

mytrip writes: "Thom Yorke's representative told me that the band have "decided not to give out any figures" for sales of Radiohead's In Rainbows album, but that isn't stopping people from making their best guesses based on what little information is available.

The Seminal estimates that Radiohead sold about $10 million-worth of albums as of 10/12, assuming that their source was correct that approximately 1.2 million people downloaded the album from the site, and that the average price paid per album was $8 (we heard that number too, but also heard that a later, more accurate average was $5, which would result in $6 million in revenue instead)."

Submission + - Cellphone Use On Planes Coming Soon (bbc.co.uk)

s31523 writes: "A while back it was reported that cell phone use was given OK on Emirate airlines. The BBC is now reporting European agencies back the use of cell phones in air. Plans have been developed to introduce technology that allow cell phone use on planes without any risk of interference. A spokesman for the UK regulator Ofcom said there were still many stages to pass through before final approval was given to the roll out of the plans, but the regulator said that the technology could be implemented next year."

Bodies blown apart too much it seems

Australian gamers looking forward to a fix of blood, guts and gore in Soldier Of Fortune: Payback have been left disappointed, following the country’s Office of Film and Literature Classification’s (OFLC) banning of the game Down Under.

Feed Engadget: Sony's PlayStation 3 to double as IPTV set-top-box (engadget.com)

Sony hasn't exactly been shy about expanding the capabilities of its PS3, and according to new reports from The Korea Times, even more non-game-related goodness will be headed its way. Apparently, KT (Korea's primary telecom operator) and Sony will "launch an internet-based TV service in November that runs on the PlayStation 3 game console," and as expected, the machine would act as a set-top-box for KT's IPTV service (Mega TV). Reportedly, neither company was willing to disclose pricing information (or any additional details, for that matter) just yet, so it looks like we'll be forced to play the wait-and-see game for now.

Journal SPAM: The Radiohead model 1

Found an interesting link in my browsing this morning. Issa (formerly Jane Siberry, you may remember her from the Crow sountrack), has had an mp3-only, self-determined price philosophy since last year:

Hello Everyone!

I wanted you to hear about this from me first. The Sheeba store has a new pricing policy.

Only fools and journos

The veteran BBC TV composer and arranger Ronnie Hazlehurst died on Monday night. His long career at the corporation produced some of the most (irritatingly) memorable theme tunes: including The Two Ronnies, Reggie Perrin, Last Of The Summer Wine, Blankety Blank and the Morse Code theme for Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

Submission + - New Use for Old Captchas (bbc.co.uk)

tomandlu writes: "The BBC is reporting that Carnegie Mellon University has found a novel use for CAPTCHAs — deciphering old texts. A sort of distributed computing project...

Basically, the CAPTCHA is made up of two words — one of which is known to Carnegie, and one of which isn't. If the user correctly deciphers the known CAPTCHA, then the unknown CAPTCHA is assumed to be correct. Well, almost. Two different users must give the same answer to the same unknown CAPTCHA before it is taken off the list.

Clever, IMHO, and might at least give us some consolation as we squint at those damn characters.

Of course, all this could be screwed if too many bots starting using the same algorithm to incorrectly guess the answer..."
